Every Philippine Military Academy cadet remembers the Recognition Rites—a defining milestone earned only after enduring the demanding weeks of Beast Barracks. The embrace between an upperclassman and a plebe is more than a tradition; it symbolizes acceptance into the Corps of Cadets, the reward for perseverance, discipline, and unwavering determination. It is a reminder that every hardship has a purpose, and that every challenge overcome builds the character of a future leader and defender of the nation.

That same spirit is captured in Edgar A. Guest's timeless poem, Don't Quit. Its message transcends generations: there will be moments when the burden feels overwhelming, when progress seems impossible, and when giving up appears to be the easiest path. Yet history is often written by those who chose to endure one more day, take one more step, and fight one more battle.

Success rarely belongs to the strongest or the fastest—it belongs to those who refuse to surrender. Whether in military service or in life's daily struggles, victory often comes just beyond the point where most people would have given up.

As the poem reminds us:

"So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit—
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit."

Military Professionalism

Military professionalism is more than wearing the uniform—it is a lifelong commitment to duty, discipline, sacrifice, and selfless service. Every soldier, sailor, airman, and marine voluntarily accepts responsibilities and hardships that few are willing to bear, placing the mission, the Constitution, and the nation above personal comfort. It is a profession defined not by privilege, but by honor, accountability, and unwavering dedication to the Filipino people.

"Men who adopt the profession of arms
submit of their own free will
to a law of perpetual constraint."
Choosing military service is a voluntary decision to embrace a life governed by discipline, rules, and accountability. Military professionals willingly place the demands of duty above personal convenience.

"Of their own accord,
they reject their right
to live where they choose,
to say what they think,
to dress as they like."
Service members willingly give up many personal freedoms because the profession requires unity, discipline, and adherence to standards. These sacrifices preserve the integrity and effectiveness of the armed forces.

"From the moment they become soldiers,
It needs but an order
to settle them in this place, to move them to that, to separate from their family
and dislocate their normal lives."
Military life requires readiness to serve wherever and whenever called. Duty often means leaving loved ones behind and adapting to new assignments without hesitation.

"In the word of command,
they must rise, march,
run, endure bad weather,
go out without sleep or food,
be isolated in some distant post,
work until they drop."
The profession demands physical endurance, mental resilience, and unwavering commitment. Military personnel continue to accomplish the mission despite fatigue, hardship, danger, and adverse conditions.

"They have ceased to become masters of their own fate."
Upon taking the oath, a military professional accepts that service to the nation comes first. Personal ambitions and preferences become secondary to the mission and the responsibilities entrusted to them.

"If they drop in their tracks,
if their ashes are scattered
to the four winds,
that is all part and parcel of their job."
The ultimate sacrifice is an inherent reality of military service. Every member accepts the risks of the profession with courage, understanding that defending the nation may demand everything they have.

PLEDGE OF LOYALTY

Loyalty is one of the three Core Values of the Philippine Military Academy, alongside Courage and Integrity. It is more than obedience—it is a steadfast commitment to the institution, the mission, and the people we are sworn to serve. The Pledge of Loyalty reminds us that true leadership is built on trust, unity, and faithful service. As PMA graduates and military professionals, these timeless principles continue to guide our conduct both in uniform and in life.

Part 1: Serve with Your Whole Heart

"If you work for a man, in heaven's name, work for him. Speak well of him, and stand by the institution he represents."

Loyalty begins with wholehearted commitment. When we choose to serve, we must give our best—not only through our work but also through the way we speak about our leaders and our institution. Supporting the institution strengthens its credibility, its mission, and the people who dedicate themselves to it.

Part 2: Loyalty Over Cleverness

"Remember that an ounce of loyalty is worth a pound of cleverness. If you must growl, condemn, and eternally find fault, why resign your position?"

Intelligence and competence are valuable, but they should be guided by loyalty. Constructive criticism has its place, but constant negativity without a genuine desire to help only weakens the organization. True loyalty means using one's abilities to solve problems, improve the institution, and contribute to its success rather than undermine it.

Part 3: Build, Don't Break

"And when you are outside, down to your heart's content. But as long as you are part of this institution, do not condemn it."

Every institution has imperfections, and every member has a responsibility to help improve it. Concerns should be raised through the proper channels and with the intention of making the organization better. Loyalty calls us to strengthen the institution from within—not diminish it through words or actions that erode trust and unity.

Part 4: Loyalty Gives Strength

"If you do, the first high wind that comes along will blow you away—and probably, you'll never know why."

An institution divided by distrust and constant criticism becomes vulnerable. Loyalty creates unity, resilience, and shared purpose, enabling an organization to withstand challenges. For every PMA graduate, Loyalty is not merely a Core Value—it is a lifelong commitment to honor our oath, uphold the institution, and faithfully serve God, Country, and the Filipino people.

As graduates of the Philippine Military Academy and proud members of the PMA SINAGLAHI Class of 2015, we stand united with the Filipino people in commemorating the 10th Anniversary of the 2016 South China Sea Arbitral Award.

The Award affirmed the Philippines' lawful maritime rights under international law and continues to remind us that disputes are best resolved through peaceful means, with respect for the rule of law.

Bound by the oath we took as graduates of the Philippine Military Academy, we remain committed to upholding the Constitution, safeguarding our nation's sovereignty, protecting the Filipino people, and living the PMA core values of Courage, Integrity, and Loyalty.

Together, we stand with every Filipino in protecting what is rightfully ours and in building a peaceful, secure, and stronger Philippines.
