ILLEGAL GAMBLING DENS IN BAGUIO

In a recent interview, Mayor Benjamin Magalong stated that he had instructed the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) to take all necessary actions to stop all illegal gambling dens that are operating elsewhere in the city.

The order follows an April 13, 2026 explosion at an establishment along Lower Magsaysay Avenue, initially reported as a snack house but confirmed as an illegal “Drop Ball” gambling den. The blast injured 14 people and prompted immediate action.

The Baguio City Council backed the effort by passing Resolution 297-2026, urging the BCPO, the Mayor’s Office and other agencies to investigate reported gambling dens, enforce closures, file charges against operators, and review or revoke related business permits.

The directive reinforces existing laws against illegal gambling and aims to preserve Baguio’s reputation as a safe, orderly highland city. Residents are highly encouraged to report suspected operations to authorities.

POSSIBLE HUGE DIESEL ROLLBACK NEXT WEEK

The Department of Energy (DOE) has indicated that another round of fuel price rollbacks on Tuesday, April 21, next week.

Citing the full-week averages of the Mean of Platts Singapore (MOPS) and foreign exchange rates, an oil industry source projected downward adjustments in retail prices for both diesel and gasoline.
Estimated price reductions per liter are as follows:
* Diesel: ₱24.00 to ₱26.00
* Gasoline: ₱2.50 to ₱3.50

The anticipated significant rollback is attributed to the continued easing on global oil prices. This follows the de-escalation of tensions in the Middle East, with the current ceasefire appearing to hold, according to the industry source.
Oil companies announce official price adjustments every Monday, with the new rates taking effect the following day (Tuesday).

What is MOPS?
MOPS refers to the Mean of Platts Singapore, the average of daily price assessments for refined petroleum products such as gasoline and diesel traded in Singapore—the regional pricing benchmark and trading hub for Asian oil markets.

VISIT BAGUIO NOW

Fuel prices in the Philippines have more than doubled due to the US-led conflict in the Middle East, forcing many to cancel or postpone travel plans.

Small group of friends or a family of four driving a diesel powered SUV from Manila to Baguio now spends nearly Php 10,000 on fuel for a round trip, excluding tolls, hotels, and meals.
Baguio City is feeling the impact, with tourist arrivals dropping sharply during peak season. Mayor Benjamin Magalong is inviting visitors to come now, saying: “Now is the right time… dahil expect na talagang maluwag ang trapiko natin.”

With fewer tourists, traffic is lighter, roads are smoother, and queues at attractions are shorter. Local businesses hope more people will take advantage of the quieter, more comfortable experience. City officials assured the public that Baguio remains safe and clean for visitors.

Although driving from Manila has become very expensive, cheaper options are available. Bus fares, as of this writing, from Cubao to Baguio start at less than PHP 700 one way.

NO MORE COVERED TARPAULIN

The lower section of the Lions Head parking area has been already opened for tourists, Saturday, April 11, 2025.

The police are continuously monitoring the area, especially traffic management, as part of the SUMVAC “Ligtas at Kalmang Paglalakbay” (Safe and Peaceful Travel) initiative.

It can already be observed that tourists visiting and enjoying the Lions Head are gradually increasing and at the same time, some stalls have also started to open.

Tourists and motorists are reminded to strictly follow the various signages at the said tourist spot.

CITY OF BAGUIO DECLARED UNDER A STATE OF CALAMITY DUE TO OIL CRISIS

The City Council unanimously approved Resolution No. 257, Series of 2026, on March 30, 2026 aligning with President Marcos’ Executive Order No. 110 declaring a national energy emergency. The resolution was certified on April 7 and signed by Mayor Benjamin Magalong.

The declaration allows the city to access its disaster risk reduction and management funds, including the Quick Response Fund, to address fuel price surges and energy disruptions. It also enables resource mobilization, stricter enforcement of regulations, and closer coordination with national agencies to stabilize transport, services, and the local economy.
The crisis has severely affected Baguio: skyrocketing fuel prices have reduced public transport trips and lengthened queues, while tourism—the city’s main economic driver—saw visitor arrivals drop by 40-50% during Holy Week, hurting hotels, hospitality, and retail businesses.

In response, the city activated its Crisis Management Committee and implemented measures like free rides and an emergency mobility program to support residents and visitors. Officials continue monitoring the situation to ensure essential goods and services remain available.

DIESEL, GAS ROLLBACK NEXT WEEK?

“MOPS (Mean of Platts Singapore) prices and premiums have softened due to the ceasefire deal in the Middle East,” ayon sa isang source sa industriya ng langis.

DIESEL- P2.50 hanggang P3.40 kada litro
GASOLINE- P1.00 kada litro

“However, modest rebounds are seen based on today’s projections,” ayon sa source sa industriya.

TARPAULIN INFRONT OF LION’S HEAD

Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) has placed a tarpaulin over the iconic Lion’s Head along Kennon Road to discourage visitors from taking photos.

The move follows an initial directive from the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), aimed at easing traffic congestion along the busy roadway.

Local vendors are already feeling the strain. One vendor, interviewed by the media, expressed deep concern that the ban could sharply cut into their customer base. They stressed how difficult the situation has become, noting that many small business owners have taken loans to keep their operations running and now face uncertainty about how they will survive if the restrictions persist.

ANTI-MENDICANCY ORDINANCE

✅ Pansamantalang silungan
✅ Pangangalagang pangkalusugan at sikolohikal
