DA-NIR & OPA HELP BOOST BAGO CITY AGRI BIO-CON AGENT LABORATORY

The Department of Agriculture–Negros Island Region (DA-NIR) and the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) continue to strengthen their support for the Bago City Agricultural Biological Control Agent (Bio-Con Agent) Laboratory, promoting sustainable, science-based, and environmentally friendly approaches to agricultural pest management.

The initiative was further strengthened through the valuable participation of OIC-Chief, Integrated Laboratory Division, Mr. Benjie B. Melanio of DA-NIR, and Planning Development Officer VI Ms. Gilda Abian of OPA, who provided essential supplies and materials for the production and propagation of Trichogramma, Beauveria bassiana, Earwig, and Metarhizium anisopliae—beneficial biological control agents that help farmers manage pests while reducing reliance on chemical pesticides.

Through this collaborative effort with the Office of the City Agriculturist of Bago City, we continue to build local capacity for biological pest management and strengthen our commitment to safer, sustainable, and climate-resilient agriculture. Padayon kita sa pagpalambo sang agrikultura para sa aton mga mangunguma.

UBE PRODUCTION, EXPANSION & VARIETY IDENTIFICATION | BAGO CITY 💜

The Department of Agriculture – Negros Island Region (DA-NIR), in partnership with the Office of the City Agriculturist – Bago City, is strengthening its efforts toward the production and expansion of Ube (Dioscorea alata) in the city through Ube Profiling, Documentation, and Variety Identification.

The activity aims to identify and document the different Ube varieties currently grown in Bago City, profile Ube farmers and production areas, and assess available planting materials as the city prepares to expand Ube production.

Leading the technical aspect of the activity is Edreson Torteo, Senior Science Research Specialist and Unit Head, Plant Genetic Resources and Conservation Management, Integrated Laboratory Division – Department of Agriculture NIR.

Joining the initiative are City Agriculturist Marvin John Blance, together with High-Value Crops Development Program Coordinators Bienvenido Villanueva and Ryan Ceasar Juarana, who will coordinate and support the implementation of the profiling, variety identification, and expansion activities.

Quality planting materials are the foundation of a strong Ube industry. Through proper varietal identification and documentation, the city can promote the multiplication and distribution of suitable planting materials, expand production areas, improve productivity, and strengthen the supply chain for Ube.

From identification to multiplication, from planting materials to production, and from farmers to markets, Bago City is taking strategic steps toward building a sustainable and competitive Ube industry.

Know the variety. Secure quality planting materials. Expand production. Grow the Ube industry!
