ANANUD

The Ritual of the Ananud is the most notable and extravagant cultural practice of the people of Amulung still practiced until this day. The Ananud is truly noteworthy with its main defining and identifying featureโ€”the small raft where various offerings are set upon before being dedicated to the spirits by setting adrift in the river.

The Ananud is being conducted due to various reasons, all of which is connected to our folk beliefs and faith. One reason is preventive or protective in nature wherein the people perform the ritual in order to drive away evil and also sickness caused by the โ€œkarangatโ€ out of supposed vengeance for any human trespass against them or their homes in the wilderness. It is with these reasons that the Ananud is also conducted as an offering in order to appease these deities of the elements so that they hold no ill will against the community.
Another important reason for the organization of the ritual is to signify thanksgiving to the Creator particularly for all the graces the people have received after the years of farming period. This reflects the centrality of agriculture in Amulung as it is tied closely to folk religion. A fruitful harvest elicits highest form of offering, with the whole community participating in the offering and coursing it through nature, the river specifically, as a channel to the spiritual world or the heavens.

Rivers are believed by many ethnic groups across Philippines as a gateway to the spiritual world or the afterlife, transporting souls of the deceased to their next life.
