SMNHS-SHS Launches Eco-Restoration

Students and teachers of Sta. Maria National High School–Senior High School (SMNHS-SHS), together with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), took part in a tree-planting activity at Busilac Kalipkip Eco-Park on Tuesday, December 2, 2025.

The activity aimed to restore, protect, and enhance the natural environment and nearby communities through the growth of trees.

The 350 participants were divided into two groups—one assigned at the entrance of the tourist spot and the other stationed on the opposite side of the river.

They planted various tree species, including Piling Liitan (100), Tuai (100), Macopa (50), Narra (135), Luan (65), and Bamboo (30), for a total of 480 seedlings.

According to Clarissa Reputula, teacher and event coordinator, this initiative showcases their collective dedication to caring for the environment and giving back to the community. By working together with students, teachers, and partner agencies, they promote eco-friendly practices and help create a healthier, more sustainable community for everyone.

“This activity highlights our united commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement. Through the combined efforts of our learners, teachers, and partner agencies, we continue to foster sustainability and work toward building a greener, healthier community for all,” said Reputula.

Adopt-A-Marian: Because Every Marian Deserves a Chance
by: Beverly H. Vicente

At SMNHS-SHS, we see the quiet struggles of our fellow Marian learners everyday. Some walk the roads to school without proper meals. Some also borrow pens and even notebooks from friends and classmates just to continue studying. Yet, behind these hardships, our teachers saw hope, and in September 2024, that hope grew into action through the Adopt-A-Marian Program.

What began as 'Adopt-a-Child' has now become 'Adopt-A-Marian', a program where our teachers voluntarily donate to help students in need. Each year, five Marians are chosen to receive support, whether it’s for uniforms, school supplies, or even food. These simple gifts ease heavy burdens, boost confidence, and give our fellow students the courage to come to school with brighter smiles.

But more than the help itself, this program carries a message: “You are not alone. We believe in you.” Those words have lifted spirits and inspired Marians to study harder, dream bigger, and keep moving forward despite challenges.

Now, the dream is to reach even more Marians. That’s why our teachers are opening the doors to our wider community- alumni, parents, co-teachers, society... anyone with a heart to share. Every donation, whether school supplies, shoes (new or gently used), financial aid, or small acts of kindness, makes a huge difference.

The Adopt-A-Marian Program is not just a project. It is a promise... that no Marian will ever be left behind. With compassion and unity, we can remind one another that every dream is worth fighting for, and every Marian deserves a chance.

Sta. Maria National High School–Senior High School Showcases Research and Skills at Senior High School Congress

Sta. Maria National High School–Senior High School showcased its students’ research and skills during the Senior High School Congress held at the Lagawe Central Gymnasium, Lagawe, Ifugao, on August 28-29, 2025.

With the theme “Dream Big. Achieve Bigger,” the congress provided learners an avenue to present research proposals, innovations, and completed works, while promoting critical thinking, creativity, and innovation among students.

Hon. Jaweh D. Habbiling, Board Member of District 1, Province of Ifugao, graced the event as guest speaker. He urged students to pursue their dreams with courage and determination. “Dream big and pursue your goals while you are young. Do not be afraid to fail, because it is through failure that we truly learn and grow,” he said, adding that “there is money in skills.”

Success stories of senior high school alumni across Ifugao also highlighted the event. Sta. Maria NHS–SHS alumnus Marvin Valdez, Class of 2018, inspired learners by sharing his journey. Though unable to fulfill his dream of becoming a veterinarian due to financial challenges, he achieved another milestone by completing his doctorate degree. “If one door closes, find the window that opens and take that chance,” Valdez said.

The school likewise showcased the talents of its current students. Jade Vine Carnate, Mary Carol Dela Cruz, Czarina Grace Rufino, and Hazel Peddiao of Grade 12 Accountancy, Business, and Administration (Section 2), under the guidance of their research adviser, Joen Mica D. Kimayong, presented their research proposal. Meanwhile, Dan James Ngitit, Judy Ann Carabacan, Claire Singapan, and Thyrell Hapchayan, all from Grade 12 Technical-Vocational majoring in Agriculture, mentored by their agriculture teacher, Minerva Abrojena, demonstrated the production of organic fertilizers, specifically Bokashi and fermented plant juice.

The event concluded with a message from SHS Congress coordinator Brenda Ducusin, who thanked all participants for sharing their outputs and encouraged them to continue dreaming big.
