A healthy Philippine long-tailed macaque (named “Maymay”) was successfully turned over and released into the Albuera/Burauen forest.

The adult female, measuring approximately 2.5 ft in length and weighing around 2.5 kg, was rescued by Ms. Mira*ol Perado of Sitio Calingatnan Upper, Brgy. San Pedro, Albuera, Leyte, and endorsed to MENRO Albuera. In recognition of her responsible action to entrust the monkey to the LGU, she was given a food pack as a token of appreciation.

Through the joint efforts of MENRO, MDRRMO, and MSWDO Albuera, the macaque was safely returned to its natural habitat.

The Philippine long-tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis philippensis), locally known as “Unggoy,” is an endemic subspecies found only in Philippine forests, is currently classified as ENDANGERED due to a population decline of more than 40% over the past 40 years. Major threats include habitat loss, illegal pet trade, hunting, and trapping.

Let us be reminded that harming or capturing wildlife is prohibited under Republic Act No. 9147. We encourage everyone to protect and respect our wildlife. If you encounter wild animals, report to the proper authorities and allow them to handle the situation safely and responsibly.

Together, let’s preserve our rich biodiversity for future generations.
