🐒 International Primate Day | 1st September 🌿
At Pilpintuwasi, we care for more than 43 primates representing six species: Saimiri sciureus, Ateles chamek, Cebus albifrons, Sapajus macrocephalus, Leontocebus lagonotus and Aotus nancymae.
Each of them has a story, and sadly, many stories begin with being taken from the wild. When they are babies, monkeys may look adorable, curious and harmless, and this can make people believe they would make good pets. But behind that innocent appearance is a wild animal with complex social relationships, natural behaviours and needs that a home cannot replace.
Monkeys are not pets. They belong in nature. 🌿
When a wild animal is taken from its natural environment, the consequences can last a lifetime. Some rescued primates may eventually have the possibility of returning to the wild, while for others, rehabilitation and release are no longer possible. In those cases, rescue means providing care, protection and a safe environment for the rest of their lives.
If we truly want to celebrate primates, let us protect them by respecting where they belong: in the wild, in the forest, and with their own kind. 💚
