Miguel on the move 💪
Giant anteaters have thick fur and a bushy tail, which can be as long as their body and is used for balance and as a blanket while sleeping.
As you can see in the second slide, they walk on the outer edges of their front feet to protect their claws. Strong forelimbs with large, curved claws are used to tear open nests and provide defense in the wild.
In the third slide, you can see Miguel enjoying his food. Giant anteaters have no teeth; instead, they use a long, sticky tongue and powerful saliva to capture insects. Our caretakers provide termite nests and other insects on a regular basis to keep his natural foraging skills sharp.
Thank you to ICAS for their technical support and guidance of our anteater program. Together, we are working to rescue, rehabilitate, and release giant anteaters back to the wild!
