The Peace Corps traces its roots and mission to 1960, when then Senator John F. Kennedy challenged students at the University of Michigan to serve their country in the cause of peace by living and working in developing countries. From that inspiration grew an agency of the federal government devoted to world peace and friendship. Since that time, more than 225,000 Americans of all ages have responded to Kennedy’s call to serve and have helped communities in 141 countries to work on issues ranging from AIDS education to information technology and environmental preservation. Today's Peace Corps is more vital than ever, working in emerging and essential areas such as information technology and business development, and contributing to the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. Peace Corps Volunteers continue to help countless individuals who want to build a better life for themselves, their children, and their communities. Comment Policy:

Nothing beats connecting face-to-face with our Peace Corps Volunteers right where the magic happens! Our Youth Development team recently spent time out in the field for 1-Year site visits, catching up with Volunteers, meeting with local community counterparts, and seeing incredible project progress firsthand. From checking on Volunteer well-being to offering hands-on support, these visits keep our shared mission moving forward together.

This year, the Holy Spirit Flower once again became the main highlight of the National Festival in Las Minas, Herrera. A celebration that brings together nature, art, folklore, and tradition, transforming this district into a gathering place for national and international visitors drawn to this very special wild orchid.
Among the attendees, several Peace Corps volunteers enthusiastically joined the festivities, enjoying the commemorative events and sharing with the community the pride for our national flower. A beautiful reminder of how culture and nature have the power to connect hearts.

Este año, la Flor del Espíritu Santo volvió a ser la gran protagonista del Festival Nacional en Las Minas, Herrera. Una celebración que une naturaleza, arte, folclor y tradición, y que convierte a este distrito en un punto de encuentro para visitantes nacionales y extranjeros atraídos por esta orquídea silvestre tan especial.
Entre los asistentes, algunas voluntarias de Cuerpo de Paz se unieron con entusiasmo a las festividades, disfrutando de los eventos conmemorativos y compartiendo con la comunidad el orgullo por nuestra flor nacional. Un bello recordatorio de cómo la cultura y la naturaleza tienen el poder de conectar corazones.

“Barriga llena, corazón contento” doesn't just mean “full belly, happy heart” in Panama, it’s a way of life. Meals are shared, bowls are generous, and most of it comes from the traditional fogón, or eco-stove.

Environment Volunteer Maddy built eco‑stoves with her community, and pictured here, her host mom, that use less wood, burn hotter, and release less smoke. Healthier kitchens, happier hearts, and plenty of good food to share. 😋🍴

“Barriga llena, corazón contento” no solo significa “full belly, happy heart” en Panamá, es una forma de vida. Las comidas se comparten, las porciones son generosas y la mayoría proviene del fogón tradicional o eco‑estufa.

Maddy, voluntaria de Medio Ambiente, construyó eco‑estufas junto a su comunidad, y aquí aparece su mamá anfitriona, usando una de ellas. Estas estufas usan menos leña, alcanzan más calor y liberan menos humo. Cocinas más saludables, corazones más felices y mucha buena comida para compartir. 😋🍴

El taller de entrada a la comunidad sirve como el primer encuentro que los Voluntarios tienen con sus contrapartes y un espacio para prepararse para los primeros meses en sus comunidades. A los contrapartes se les capacita en su rol de guía comunitario y socio de trabajo dentro del programa correspondiente y forman un plan de integración y trabajo junto con su Voluntario para los primeros tres meses de servicio.

The Community Entrance Workshop serves as a first encounter that Volunteers have with their counterparts and a space to prepare themselves for their first months of service. Counterparts are trained en their role as a community guide and work partner within their corresponding program and they form an integration and work plan with their Volunteer for the first three months of service.
