Election year next year.

I’ll be doing absolutely everything I can to continue to bring awareness to issues that are affecting the communities BBM represents.

I’m also looking forward to starting our BBM behind the wire programme in Kohuora - Auckland South Corrections Facility

How can we disrupt and shatter these cycles. If you see me with any politicians know that message to them never changes.

Support the community organisations that are already in the community working. They have the trust. Support them to level up. Imagine the impact.

We as a people have the power. We just need to exercise it, get up and vote. Follow my page closely. Lets do this.

We’re beyond blessed to do this music ting! We’ve travelled the world through music, but playing at Wiri prison was by far the best experience EVER! Big up to the organisers for making this happen. After the concert, we mingled with the inmates, had some good chats. The concert was uplifting and gave hope to the bros. There were lifers in there who’ve never been to a concert, ever. Honestly, If you wanna test your front man skills, try performing to inmates 😂the vibe was unreal. We had them on their feet, singing and dancing! It was more of an emotional reward for us knowing that we’ve made their year/christmas.

Music - the universal language.

We were delighted to welcome Dave Letele to Kohuora last week, where he visited and spoke with the men from a couple of our cultural units - Te Whare o Te Whaiora, and Moana Polynesia. Both of these units enjoy access to cultural activities and resources behind the wire, as well as external providers who come in to support the kaupapa. The men were excited to hear Dave speak after many of them had read his new book, No Excuses. The staff were very grateful for Dave's time at Kohuora and we look forward to strengthening our relationship with the Brown Buttabean team!

The Kohuora Auckland South Corrections Facility team was ready with a warm welcome for Serco AsPac’s Justice Managing Director Michael Strickland recently.

Michael and Justice Operations General Manager Nick Rowe were briefed on protocol during the traditional wero and rousing haka they faced as part of their pōwhiri to Te Whare o Te Whaiora, a Māori focus wing. Michael then attended the blessing and official opening of Le Fale O’le Anamua, the new Pasifika wing in the same House Block.

Michael said he was impressed with these important cultural initiatives made by staff and prisoners during Covid restrictions designed to reconnect prisoners to their culture and identity.

In true Pasifika style, our guests were treated to a Pasifika feast to wrap up the celebrations.

In recognition of Anzac Day on 25 April, tāne at Kohuora received a booklet celebrating the 28th Māori Battalion, which served in World War II. By the end of the war, the Māori Battalion had established a formidable reputation as a fighting force and was one of New Zealand’s most decorated unit. The booklet was put together by Kohuora Whānau Support Liaison, Diane.

“I wrote the booklet to bring awareness to our Māori men who may not know about the Maori Battalion and the high esteem it is held in, by Māori and Pākehā, here and overseas,” Diane said.

“This is a rich history of our people and I thought this Anzac Day would be a great opportunity to provide an insight into the significant contribution iwi made. In conversations with many of the men on site, they see World War II as a European war. But their tupuna (ancestors) played a massive role in New Zealand’s war effort.”

Ngā mihi o te Aranga, Aotearoa! Happy Easter from all of us at Kohuora. We hope that you and your whānau are safe and well. Here's our latest edition of Kōtuitui, with some updates around what's been happening at Auckland South Corrections Facility.

Christmas is a time for whānau and so can be a very difficult and lonely time for prisoners. This year is particularly challenging for our men in Kohuora, who have been unable to see their whānau and friends since lockdown began. Managers and staff have joined together to help spread a little joy this festive season.

•The photo booth in the Visits Hall came back for a second year, but this time with a twist - the men took individual festive photos to send out to whanau in Christmas cards, supplied by our Children & Whanau team.
•Over 350 men participated in separate touch rugby and volleyball tournaments during Sports Week, with a sausage sizzle and prizes after every game.
•Today concludes our Cultural Festival with kapa haka, mau rakau and Polyfest performances every day this week, with hangi and sweet treats to celebrate. We have watched several seriously impressive performances - as staff we continue to be enormously proud of the hard work put in by the men!

From everyone at Kohuora - ngā mihi o te Kirihimete me te Tau Hou!
