Kia ora Whānau,

The Puanga Matariki Festival is a special celebration with a series of cultural events happening within the Whangārei District for people to come and celebrate together. Check out all the amazing things on offer.

15 June to 17 July 2026
Ko Puanga te whetū i ārahi i ā Matariki ki te Tau Hou (Puanga is the star that guides Matariki to the New Year).

Puanga and Matariki is a time to encourage whanaungatanga, share stories and kai. It also marks the beginning of the Māori New Year, which traditionally was the time to plant trees, prepare the lands for planting crops and, more importantly, renew links with whānau and friends.

Matariki Celebration
Kia ora Whānau,
We are delighted to invite you to our Matarau School Matariki Celebration on Thursday the 18th of June here at Matarau School.
We have a great day planned with awesome learning experiences, some of which offer a chance for students to reflect, set new goals, remember loved ones, and enjoy working with and alongside their peers.
Please come and celebrate with us! Tea and coffee will be available inside the hall throughout the day. The day will start in the hall just after 9:00 AM, welcoming everyone with whole-school waiata and a special Matariki-inspired performance by our Marimba and Ukulele groups. Children will then move around from station to station in their house colour groups starting from 9:20 AM.
Kai- Shared Morning Tea & Soup for Lunch. We are planning to have a shared morning tea together. Could you please send a plate of food with your child (1 plate per whānau) that morning? It can be delivered to Room 10 from 8:00 AM.
In addition, each class will be preparing soups to share with everyone later in the day from 12.40 pm. To support our Enviroschools kaupapa, we kindly ask that all students bring their own mug or a bowl and spoon to help reduce waste in the environment.
Everyone is welcome to spend a snippet of the day with us or stay for the whole time! We will wrap up the end of the day with a special performance by the Kapa Haka rōpū at 2.40 pm.
We are excited to be able to celebrate Matariki together, and we hope that you can make it!
Any questions please message Anna Alexander [email protected]
