The Radiation Oncology Service, Te Hihiri Whakahauora — Cultural Narrative and Design Story

Te Hihiri Whakahauora is a place of protection, connection and renewal, shaped by the whenua and guided by mātauranga for the people of Te Tai Tokerau. Its creation reflects the cultural leadership of Te Ahi Kaa, the hapori kōrero held by ĀKAU and passed through creative collaborations with local ringatoi.

The design and delivery expertise of Jasmax ensured these cultural narratives were carried through the built form with integrity and care. The result is a space shaped by many hands and hearts, created to uphold healing, dignity and connection for generations to come.

This morning we celebrated the blessing and official opening of the new Radiation Oncology Service, Te Hihiri Whakahauora, at Whangārei Hospital. This marks a major milestone for cancer care in Te Tai Tokerau, with around 350 patients each year no longer needing to travel to Auckland for radiation treatment.

The three level facility connects directly to the Jim Carney Cancer Treatment Centre and has been designed to create a calm, welcoming experience.

Whānau spaces sit on the upper level, staff and planning areas on the mid-level, and treatment rooms including the linear accelerator and CT scanner are located on the ground floor. The development also includes two radiation bunkers, four additional chemotherapy chairs and expanded reception and support areas.

The service has been shaped through close collaboration with Te Ahi Kā, Jasmax and ĀKAU, ensuring the building reflects the identity, stories and aspirations of the communities it serves. Natural materials, soft textures and carefully controlled light and acoustics create a human centred environment that supports both patients and staff.

Go Home Better Off

Today our Whangārei Project Pihi Kaha construction teams heard a powerful message from mental health advocate Rob Mokaraka, a reminder that the most important thing is getting home safely, in every sense.

Jeremy Evans opened with a challenge to all of us: “Go home safely and better off than when you arrived.”

And the team is already living this by standing in the gap for each other , speaking up, checking in, and supporting their mates.

Rob’s kōrero hit home. His journey from crisis to healing is raw, honest and full of aroha. He shared simple tools we can all use:

• Notice your “negative playlist”
• Step aside and get help when you need it
• Crying is better than dying
• Build your “tight 3”
• Find balance in the small things

Big thanks to WorkSafe for joining us and reminding crews they’re here to support, serve and engage.

“Having a respiratory illness can really affect people’s day-to-day lives, as well as their mental health and confidence. Being able to make a diagnosis or help people manage their treatment is really satisfying.

When patients come back to me and say: ‘Now I can play with my grandkids’ or ‘now I can go fishing’ it’s an incredible feeling.

Nurses make a difference every day to their patients’ lives even if they don’t always realise it. The great thing about nursing is there are lots of opportunities for growth.

I think it’s good for nurses to explore different pathways and chase their passion. That way, nurses feel their work is rewarding and the community also benefits.”

For , which was earlier this week, Renju Mathew, Nurse Practitioner from the Whangārei Hospital Respiratory Department, describes the rewards of guiding people through diagnosis, treatment, and back to doing the things they love.
