If you own or manage a commercial building, you’ve likely heard the term ‘Building Warrant of Fitness’ – but understanding whether your building actually requires a BWOF can be confusing.

At Fireco, this is one of the most common questions we hear from property owners and managers across Northland and Auckland:

“Does my building need a BWOF?”

The short answer is simple: If your building has specified safety systems installed, it will require an annual BWOF.

This winter, remember to keep it "a metre from the heater."

No tape measure? No worries!

An acoustic guitar, a cricket bat, or the length of your mate’s arms when he’s describing the snapper he definitely caught, all measure roughly about a metre!

However you size it up, make sure you’re keeping your heaters at least one metre away from anything flammable this winter.

Smoke alarms vs fire alarms - what’s right for your Northland home or business?

It’s a common question, and the answer depends on the type of property you’re protecting.

For homes, photoelectric smoke alarms are the gold standard. They’re designed to detect slow, smouldering fires early, which gives you and your family more time to get out safely. They’re simple, effective, and essential for every household.

For businesses, the requirements are more advanced. Professionally installed fire alarm systems are designed to protect larger spaces, alert occupants quickly, and integrate with other safety systems. They also need to meet compliance standards and be regularly inspected as part of your BWOF.

The good news? Fireco can take care of both! From supplying photoelectric smoke alarms to managing full fire alarm system installs, our team has you covered.

Not all fire hazards are obvious.

While most businesses have fire extinguishers and smoke alarms in place, some fire risks fly under the radar - until it’s too late.

Commonly overlooked dangers include overloaded power boards, which can overheat and spark when too many devices are plugged in, as well as blocked exits or sprinkler systems caused by stored stock or furniture.

Damaged electrical cords with frayed or exposed wiring are another serious risk, and flammable clutter like paper, boxes, or chemicals stored near heat sources can quickly become a fire hazard.

The good news is that these risks are easy to address with a bit of awareness and regular checks. Keeping workspaces clear, maintaining electrical equipment, and staying on top of fire safety systems all play a big role in reducing risk.
