International students special baking session with GBB
Volunteers with Good Bi***es Baking (GBB) Whanganui bake for a variety of charities around Whanganui under their motto – ‘Spreading kindness, one treat at a time.”
On Monday they had a special baking session with international students from Whanganui Girls College. The students, guided and supported by GBB volunteers, baked biscuit treats to donate to the City Mission who support people doing it tough.
Jane Williams Head of International at the College reached out to GBB and Head Bitch Tania Taylor was only too happy to help out. As many of the international students don’t sit NCEA exams and as some will be returning home next week, this week was a good opportunity to do the baking.
Tania says, “It’s a beautiful example of cross-cultural connection, generosity in action and young people giving back to the community. We are really keen on building connections with schools to have young people baking for the benefit of the community.”
They have also reached out to the prison. Sam Casey in their Prison Bake Co-ordinator. They run a 6 week programme of 2 hours each day with four men participating each week. Two GBB volunteers teach them how to bake and to encourage kindness with the donation of the baked goods to those in the community. The baking is down in the Self Care Unit based outside of the wire. Feedback has been positive with the prisoners keen and engaged.
The numbers of international students and the different countries they come from is recovering from Covid days. Jane says “Some students prefer living in the hostels, other prefer home stays and we are always looking for home stays. If you are interested in hosting a home stay, get in touch with the College.”
