Work to improve the condition and performance of Victoria Park’s turf areas will begin next Monday, 15 June.

The improvements to the cricket fields will include around 350 metres of trenching and reseeding and are expected to take about five working days to complete, weather permitting.

To safely carry out the improvements, trenching areas will be clearly marked with barriers, waratahs, high-vis tape and signage, which will be checked daily while the work is underway.

While the majority of Victoria Park will remain open for community use, please take care around active work areas and follow all signage and temporary safety measures.

Thanks for your patience while these improvements are carried out.

🙌 Huge thanks to the more than 100 people who joined us in person or online for our Head Start information session on Tuesday night, and to our MC and panelists! It was a great opportunity to hear different perspectives on what could be the biggest change to councils in decades.

Whether you joined us on the night or are just starting to explore the issues, we'd like to hear your thoughts.

🗣️ Take our five-minute Head Start survey here 👉 https://buff.ly/elY4CYu

What's Head Start? The government has asked councils to develop proposals to merge with others.

Before we come up with options, we'd like to hear what matters most to our community. Your feedback will help shape Whanganui’s approach as we work through this process.

We've now tallied up the results from this year's Household Hazardous Waste Day – and participation was nearly double that of last year 📈

In total, more than 500kg of hazardous material was collected for safe treatment and disposal, including:
✅ 147kg of pesticides, herbicides and fungicides
✅ 131kg of household chemicals and cleaners
✅ 41kg of aerosols
✅ 48kg of flammable liquids
✅ 134kg of liquid fertilisers and treatment products

There was some pretty nasty stuff amongst the material collected – including nearly 5kg of banned pesticides which had to be sent overseas for specialist treatment and disposal.

Big thanks to everyone who did the right thing for our environment by keeping hazardous waste out of our waterways and out of landfills!

What a great turnout at the North Mole Community Day! 🌊

Thank you to everyone who came along to learn more about the vision for this popular recreational space, share your ideas and help shape the future of the North Mole.

The feedback received on the concept designs will now be considered as the project moves into its next phase.

A big thank you also to Progress Castlecliff, hapū at place, and everyone else involved in delivering this event. It was a true collaborative effort and a great example of what can be achieved when our community comes together around a shared vision.

Check out the original post below for some great photos from the day and an update on what happens next.

Whanganui District Council is running a public information session at the War Memorial Centre on Tuesday 9 June to start exploring what the government’s Head Start programme could mean for Whanganui.
As well as a panel of speakers, we’ll have live audience voting via phones. This means you’ll be able to respond to key questions as we go and see what others in the room think in real time.

What’s it all about? Head Start is part of the government’s plan to simplify local government. Councils have been given three months to come up with proposals to merge with others.

We’re not at the stage of developing options yet – we’ll ask for your thoughts on those later.
For now, we know there’s lots of interest and questions and we’re keen to kick off the conversation with the wider community. We’ll keep what you tell us front of mind as we start to develop options in coming weeks.

We're repairing damage to the traffic island and garden near Watt Fountain tomorrow, Tuesday, 9 June so please allow a little more time if you're travelling through the area.

To safely carry out this work, the left-hand lane heading towards St Hill Street will be closed. A small repair to the fountain will also be completed while a Whanganui Alliance crew is on site. Work is expected to start around 7.30am.

Businesses remain open as usual and access will be maintained where possible. Thanks for your patience while we get everything back in shape.
