Winter has arrived, bringing a higher risk of flu, Covid-19 and other illnesses.
Getting immunised helps lower your risk of serious illness. It also reduces the chance of passing infections on to others — especially children, older adults, those who are pregnant, and people with underlying health conditions. The vaccine is also updated each year to match the flu strains expected to circulate.
The 2026 flu vaccine is free for some people:
- people aged 65 years and over
- people aged 6 months and over who have a long term medical condition like diabetes, asthma, or a heart condition
- pregnant people
- tamariki (children) aged 4 years and under who have been hospitalised for respiratory illness, or have a history of significant respiratory illness
- people with mental health conditions, including schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, or schizoaffective disorder
- people who are currently accessing secondary or tertiary mental health and addiction services.
If you’re not eligible and don’t have a voucher from your employer, there will be a cost. The flu vaccine usually costs between $25 and $45.
If you’re unsure, your doctor, nurse, healthcare provider or local pharmacy can help.
