⚠️ Power Point Safety with Glen

When we spot unsafe electrical setups in homes or businesses, we share it, because keeping our community safe is at the heart of what we do 💚

You might know Glen as one of the community's hard working firefighters, but we're also lucky to have him as one of our amazing, longstanding electricians. Here’s his advice on power point safety:

A cracked or broken power point isn’t just cosmetic-it can expose live wires and cause shock, burns, or fire. Even if it still works, it’s not safe!

⚡ Broken faceplates or loose fittings can leave live wiring accessible, meaning:

• Accidental contact can result in serious electric shock or electrocution.
• Metal objects (keys, tools, appliances) can make contact and cause arcing which is extremely dangerous

🚨 Warning Signs to act on immediately:

• Cracks, chips, or missing pieces on the outlet
• Loose or wobbly power points
• Discolouration, burn marks, or melted plastic
• Sparking when plugging in devices

✅ What You Should Do:

• Do not use the damaged power point
• Turn off power at the switchboard if safe to do so
• Keep others away from the area, especially tamariki
• Arrange repair by a qualified electrician as soon as possible
• Never attempt DIY electrical repairs

A Final word from Glen- “If it’s cracked, it’s not just cosmetic—it could be electric.”

For any queries or concerns around electrical safety in your home, contact ESL on 03 788 9900, and we'll be happy to help.

⚡ Powerline Safety in Wet Weather 🌧️

With heavy rain setting in for the next couple of days, it's a good time to remind our community that wet weather conditions can increase risk around powerlines.

Water conducts electricity, meaning wet conditions can make hazards more dangerous and less visible. Fallen lines, damaged equipment, or water pooling near electrical assets can all pose serious risks.

Stay safe by:

⚠️ Staying well clear of any fallen or low-hanging powerlines
🚫 Never touching anything in contact with a powerline
⚡ Treating all lines as live, even if they appear inactive
🌧️ Keeping children and pets away from flooded or damaged areas near powerlines
📞 Reporting any concerns or hazards immediately

🔌 If a power outage occurs, please check our page for live updates and share these with your whanau, neighbours and friends who do not use social media. During outages, our teams are often out working in challenging conditions and we are unable to answer individual requests for information.

Check out our website and digital community newsletter for further helpful information:

🍂 Autumn Safety Reminder: Trees and Powerline Safety 🍂

As leaves fall and winds pick up, it’s the perfect time to check trees around your property. Keeping trees clear of powerlines isn’t just good practice, it’s a legal responsibility and essential for keeping our community safe and powered.

🌳 Why it matters:

Trees growing too close to powerlines are a major cause of outages and can be extremely dangerous.

They can:

⚡ Cause sparks and fires.
⚡ Bring lines down in strong winds or bad weather.
⚡ Become electrically ‘live’, creating a serious shock risk.
⚡ Put children at risk if climbing nearby trees.
⚡ Damage underground cables through root growth.

📏 Keep your distance:

➡️ Keep yourself, all tools, equipment, and machinery at least 4 metres away from powerlines at all times when working.
➡️ Safe distances apply from the line, not the pole.
➡️ Extra clearance may be needed for long spans or in severe weather.

⚠️ Your responsibilities:

✔️ You are responsible for trees on your property.
✔️ Trees too close to lines may receive a Cut/Trim Notice requiring action.
✔️ You must give at least 3 days’ notice before trimming near lines.
✔️ After initial support, ongoing trimming is the property owner’s responsibility.
✔️ Failure to comply can result in fines of up to $10,000 + $500 per day.

✂️ Trimming trees safely:

Cutting near live lines is dangerous and should only be done by qualified professionals. If you're unsure, contact us. We can help arrange safe trimming or temporary disconnection if needed.
Being proactive with tree maintenance helps prevent outages, reduces fire risk, and keeps everyone safe this Autumn.

If you see trees or branches too close to lines, report it straight away. Please also refer to our company website for further information: https://bullerelectricity.co.nz/trees-power-lines/

Let’s work together to keep the power on and our community safe 🍁⚡
