Busy day at Mystery Creek Fieldays. It’s important that the West Coast Tasman representative heads out of the region occasionally especially to meetup with the NZ First team. A big day talking to farmers, innovators and some passionate party members.

Not much help from Labour for our West Coast and rural people as we don’t have public transport. What’s worse is this policy asks you to pay for city bus fares. There’s no such thing as free and unfortunately once again the regions are expected to pay for labours latest splash of cash we don’t actually have.

The West Coast Tasman is a huge electorate and no matter who represents it, they face a big challenge to be present and available to their constituents. I’ve started chipping away at that mission and really enjoy hearing and seeing for myself the communities, opportunities and challenges. Investing in defence also provides a great pathway for many young New Zealanders into technical trades. Skills that will continue to serve them well wherever life takes them.

Great to see government continue to invest in these long term assets. The West Coast leadership has worked for many years now in securing funding into our ports. Ports will also be critical assets for emergency recovery in the event of our overdue alpine fault earthquake.

It comes as the council has struggled to maintain the critical piece of infrastructure in the West Coast town.

NZ FIRST UNASHAMEDLY SUPPORTS OUR REGION TO HARNESS OUR RESOURCES and that includes the sun, rain and wind!
Regions need a variety of energy generation. In the West Coast Tasman, hydro is a huge opportunity. Not all political parties agree with some still blocking projects and fighting the wishes of the community. During this campaign don’t be afraid to ask candidates if their party will support regional generation such as hydro. I can certainly confirm my support for projects that help in the resilience and affordability of electricity in the regions.

I think this investment is a great long term strategy. Remember, rail on the West Coast will only survive while we have coal to underpin what is an extremely expensive line to maintain. The loss of bulk coal via the midland line would almost certainly see this line fail. The recent fuel crisis has shown us how exposed we are as a nation to the whims of overseas countries. Long term, efficient rail in New Zealand will serve us well and this investment keeps us moving steadily down that path.
