The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) plays a central role in shaping and delivering a strong New Zealand economy. Our contribution to improving the well-being of New Zealanders is summarised in our purpose, to grow New Zealand for all.

'Grow' relates to economic performance. To achieve the standard of living and quality of life for today and for future generations we need a

well-performing economy through productive and sustainable use of resources across New Zealand.

‘For all’ means all people have an opportunity to participate in and benefit from the economy. For us, success looks like:
prosperous and adaptable people, sectors and regions
people are skilled and engaged in safe and fulfilling work
informed consumers and businesses interacting with confidence
value is sustainably derived from the natural environment
a dynamic business environment fostering innovation and international connections. These aspirations are echoed in our Māori identity – Hīkina Whakatutuki – which broadly means ‘lifting to make successful'. Read our terms of use for social media - www.mbie.govt.nz/smterms

📢 Congratulations to the 2026 New Zealand Space Scholarship recipients!

This talented group will spend 3 months at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory working alongside scientists and engineers on real-world missions. They will contribute to cutting-edge space technology projects and gain experience at the forefront of global space innovation. 👏

While at JPL, they will work across a range of projects, including astrovirology, analysing gas reactions under vacuum ultraviolet (UV) light, developing power electronics systems, and end-to-end telemetry analysis. 🪐🚀👩‍🔬🔬

Our New Zealand Space Agency team's scholarship gives postgraduate students the opportunity to gain valuable international experience before bringing that expertise home. Building a highly skilled, space-capable workforce is a key priority of New Zealand’s Space and Advanced Aviation Strategy.

Congratulations to Zhen Hong Chai (Zac), Kyja McCabe, Alexander Wiseman, Laura Franssen, Angela Xue, Thomas Phillips and Laura Doyle!

📢 Patch to the Future update!

We’re very impressed with the Year 5/6 students at Auckland’s Newmarket School in this Kea Kids News clip who have been learning about space and designing their mission patches 🚀

Their teacher, Edward, has captured the imagination of his class. He’s taken the learning outside the classroom, and as you will see, the students have a keen interest in space, and what space travel will look like in the future, plus they have designed some amazing mission patches! 👋

There’s still time to enter the Patch to the Future mission patch design competition (for NZ-based students in Years 1–8 / aged 5–13). Entries close 11.59pm, this Friday, 5 June.

🚀 Patch to the Future is now live - a mission patch design competition for Years 1–8 (ages 5-13) from our New Zealand Space Agency.

🛰️ This is a chance for students to explore space, science and New Zealand’s place in space through a mission patch design.

🔭 A mission patch is a small, circular design that represents an idea, goal, or mission. Astronauts wear them on their space suits to celebrate their mission – and now Kiwi kids can design one too.

✨ The winning design will be turned into an official New Zealand Space Agency patch – plus - the winner will get a limited edition New Zealand Space Agency jacket featuring their design!
