Congratulations to our former Chief Ombudsman Sir Peter Boshier who received an Honorary life Membership to the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) in recognition of his service. Sir Peter contributed immensely to the Office’s International Development work representing New Zealand globally. During his tenure as Chief Ombudsman, Sir Peter was Vice President of the IOI, Regional President of Australasia and the Pacific, Chair of the IOI By-laws Review Committee, and active member of the UN Working Group.

The IOI was established in 1978, and is the only global organisation for the cooperation of more than 200 independent Ombudsman institutions from more than 100 countries worldwide. The IOI is organised in six regional chapters (Africa, Asia, Australasia & Pacific, Europe, the Caribbean & Latin America, and North America). In its effort to focus on good governance and capacity building, the IOI supports members via training, research, and regional subsidies for projects.

In line with Youth Week from May 18- 24 we’re sharing research we commissioned from 2020-2025 informing how we work with children and young people in care. The theme for Youth Week this year is: ‘Our Voices Matter, We Deserve to Be Heard.’ Click on the link below to hear from our youth and to read the research and insights from Tamariki and care providers.

This work helped us prepare for our expanded role overseeing the Oranga Tamariki system, which came into effect in May 2023 ➡

The Chief Ombudsman, says a proposal in the Fisheries Amendment Bill to exempt commercial fishing camera footage from release under the Official Information Act is unnecessary and excessive. John made an oral submission on the Bill before Parliament’s Primary Production Committee.

John says the array of measures included in the Bill including carving out fishing camera footage from the OIA aren’t justified because the law already offers protections:

“In my view, these measures risk undermining the OIA, and lowering trust and confidence in both the fishing industry and in government.”
