It’s been a great week for National Blood Donor Week! 🩸

A huge thank you to all the lovely people who booked in for a ‘Bloody Important Meeting’ and donated at our Wellington Donor Centre – whether you came along as a team or gave individually, we appreciate you.

A small amount of your time will make a big difference for patients in need. ❤️

Ka rawe Lila! We loved learning about Lila’s favourite blood component - white cells (also known as leukocytes) ♥️

White blood cells are responsible for protecting your body from infections. As part of your immune system, they circulate in your blood and respond to injuries and illness.

The type of white blood cells that “eat” germs are called phagocytes. They protect your body by ingesting harmful foreign particles, damaged cells, and bacteria.

We can’t wait to see Lila’s scientific discoveries in the 2040’s and beyond. You’ve got a few years to go Lila, so no pressure 🫣

We’re so excited to have video game designer Robert as part of our lifesaving crew!

NZ Blood have been able to change part of the eligibility criteria thanks to the amazing mahi from and our LGBTQIA+ community through the SPOTS study, and an extra shout out to other groups and individuals who helped make this change happen!

Under the previous rules, many gay and bisexual men were unable to donate blood.

Now the approach to assessing donor eligibility is done on an individual basis - sexuality no longer factors into it. This makes the process more fair and consistent 💕

There is still criteria around sexual activity but now it applies to everyone ♥️

You can find the new criteria here:
https://www.nzblood.co.nz/news/2026/new-zealand-blood-service-to-change-sexual-activity-screening-for-all-donors

While this is a significant step forward, it’s not the final stage. We’ll be continuing to explore opportunities that enable more kiwis to become donors in future 💕

We celebrate international nurses day every year on May 12. The date was chosen in honour of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, who was born on this day (in 1820).

The theme for international nurses day 2026 is:
Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives.

The theme reflects a commitment to ensuring nurses have the authority, resources and working conditions they need to deliver exceptional care ♥️

Nurses protect communities and hold health systems together - we recognise and celebrate their extraordinary daily mahi.

Thank you nurses.

Megan became a blood donor at University, she never thought she’d be on the receiving end of a blood transfusion.

But that’s what happened in July 2024 when Megan gave birth to a beautiful baby boy.

Megan haemorrhaged soon after giving birth, and lost 2 litres of blood.

As an O negative blood type, Megan is a universal donor, and can give blood to everyone - but she can only receive O negative blood.

2 people with O negative blood types made the choice to donate earlier that month. That choice helped protect a new mum.

Blood products are a much-needed aspect of obstetrics:

♥️ Blood is a critical, life-saving treatment for postpartum haemorrhaging or significant blood loss during a C-section.
♥️ Red cell transfusions are used to treat severe anaemia from pregnancy.
♥️ Anti-D immunoglobulin (a plasma product) is given to pregnant people whose negative blood types are incompatible with their baby’s positive blood type.

Happy Mother’s Day

As an organisation that champions lifesavers, we are of course impressed amazing mahi provided by animal rescues in Aotearoa ♥️

Thank you for providing care to a bird that need a helping hand ♥️
Thanks to them, Count Dracoola is on the mend!

It’s NZSL (New Zealand Sign Language) Week in Aotearoa!

Did you know you can request an NZSL interpreter for your blood or plasma donation? We use interpreters from iSign and they’re available at our donor centres and blood drives.

We do ask that you book with 2 weeks notice so we can ensure an interpreter is available - you can request this service when you book an appointment online or via the app ♥️

Want to learn NZSL? Find resources on NZSL.nz or through deaf.org.nz
