Have you seen wasps on te ahumairangi hill ?

Wasps are an often underestimated threat. Painful stings aside, the New Zealand population’s combined biomass is larger than that of all our rats, mice, stoats, and birds combined. Wasps destroy or seriously damage 8–9% of honeybee hives in New Zealand each year. The predation rate of wasps on some native invertebrates is also extremely high.

Wellington’s Wasp wipeout is an important initiative, to safeguard our growing biodiversity.

If you are exploring Te Ahumairangi in November you can really help our cause by keeping an eye out for German and common wasps and reporting to us either by

- private message to our Facebook
- recording the sighting on the "inaturalist app"

Information to include
- approximate location
- type of wasp if known
- number of wasps
- a photo is really helpful for the location and the wasp ID but not necessary

We are interested in all sightings and especially if you see multiple wasps at a single location

How to indentify wasps?

A campaign against wasps - a threat to native species and the economy - is coming to the capital.

Restore, Protect, Connect

Te Ahumairangi is at the heart of Wellingtons town belt, and creates a dramatic green backdrop to “Our Natural Capital”. The towering height of the hill (303m!), tall canopy, rich biodiversity, creeks and tributaries, uninterupted green space and proximity to Otari-Wilton Bush and Zealandia make it a haven for native species. We are a grassroots, experienced conservation team dedicated and passionate about

  • RESTORE native flora and fauna

  • PROTECT the ecological and cultural significance

  • CONNECT nature and people, wilderness and city
