We were so pleased to read the new report, Perceptions of Asia 2026, issued by Asia New Zealand Foundation . According to the report, Kiwis see Japan as New Zealand's most trusted, closest friend, their most important defence partner in Asia, and, the second most important country in Asia for New Zealand. Japan ranks as the leading Asian destination for New Zealanders undertaking an OE. The report also revealed that Kiwis love Japanese entertainment!

Here are some excerpts from the report:

- New Zealanders also continue to see Japan as New Zealand’s closest friend in Asia (81 percent), a ranking Japan has consistently held since the question was first asked in 2017.

- Japan continues to be New Zealand’s most trusted power in Asia (70 percent high trust) and has increased eight percentage points to surpass trust in the United Kingdom for the first time.

- Over half of New Zealanders (55 percent) say Japan is the most important defence and security partner for New Zealand to work with in Asia. Japan is the only country to have been consistently selected by at least half of New Zealanders since 2021, when the question was first asked.

- Japan is the clear top choice, with almost half (47 percent) naming it as their preferred OE destination. New Zealanders pointed to Japan’s appealing culture and its reputation as a safe and respectful society. People also highlighted Japan’s food culture and its beautiful natural environment.

- Japan (45%) is the biggest source of Asian entertainment consumed among New Zealanders, followed by entertainment and content from South Korea (37%).

また、日本は若いNZ人がOE(Overseas Experience:海外経験)を行う際のアジアで最も人気のある渡航先となっています。さらに、この報告書では、NZ人は日本のエンタメ好きなことも明らかになりました!

Today, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs FUNAKOSHI welcomed H.E. Mr. Bede CORRY, Chief Executive and Secretary of Foreign Affairs and Trade of New Zealand, to Tokyo, where they held consultations. NZ is an indispensable partner for Japan as it promotes initiatives under the updated Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) recently announced. It was a valuable opportunity to review the situation in the Indo-Pacific and to accelerate strategic cooperation between our two countries, including diplomacy with Pacific island nations and maritime security cooperation.

As part of his study abroad experience in Japan, current MEXT scholar Grant Randell, who has been studying at the University of Tokyo since October 2025, kindly shared some personal observations and reflections for prospective applicants. Stay tuned for more practical advice from Grant!

✨Postgraduates: If applying for a university or professor, make sure your interests align with that programme or professor, and ideally read some publications written by them.

✨Undergraduates: This is the best opportunity to make lasting relationships with Japanese people. If you plan on staying in Japan, especially working in Japan, this is where you will make the most important connections. Sign up for extra-curricular activities and internships etc.

✨Embrace your kiwi-ness/foreignness: learn to understand the Japanese culture but negotiate with it mindfully and respectfully. Example: if you have a class or seminar, your Japanese counterparts will likely be shy and formal. As a Kiwi, you can talk casually/playfully and create an atmosphere that is great for everyone to participate and share more freely. Don't be afraid to sound stupid or use wrong Japanese. By not taking yourself too seriously you'll encourage others to open up.
