Team USA is off to a winning start at the FIFA World Cup!

From the stands of SoFi Stadium in Inglewood to The Bridge Bar at the The Cambridge Hotel in Wellington - and even living rooms across New Zealand - U.S. Embassy staff, families, and one very dedicated four-legged supporter were cheering on the U.S. as the USA defeated Paraguay 4–1 in their opening match.

One team. One match. Fans everywhere. Bring on the next one. 🇺🇸 ⚽️ 🙌

On June 14, 1942, the first U.S. Marines arrived in New Zealand.

What followed became known as the "Friendly Invasion" - a remarkable chapter in the shared history of the United States and New Zealand.

Between 1942 and 1944, more than 100,000 American Marines and servicemen passed through New Zealand. They were welcomed into homes, schools, sports clubs, and communities across the country, forging friendships that extended far beyond the war.

More than 80 years later, the stories of hospitality, camaraderie, and shared sacrifice continue to be remembered by both nations. The bonds formed during those years remain an enduring part of the U.S.-New Zealand partnership.

Join us in the video below, as we remember the arrival of the Marines on June 14, 1942, and celebrate a unique chapter in the friendship between our two countries.

As we mark America's 250th anniversary through the Freedom 250 celebrations, we're reflecting on the people, partnerships, and shared moments that have helped shape the enduring relationship between the United States and New Zealand.

United States SailGP Team doesn’t just race fast - this video captures the mindset behind it. 🇺🇸

From split-second decisions at 100km/h to pushing through brutal Auckland conditions, the team’s message is clear: champions are built on work ethic, resilience, and the willingness to keep pushing when things get tough.

“Hearing that anthem, you think about all the people that came before us… those that fight and have lost, but will always put America first.”

The U.S. SailGP Team brought that mentality to the ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix earlier this year, battling huge gusts, dramatic moments on the Waitematā Harbour, and one of SailGP’s toughest race courses, which included a race win.

As America approaches its 250th anniversary in 2026, Freedom250 celebrates the drive, innovation, determination, and spirit of excellence that continue to push Americans forward, on the water and beyond.

Ideas, innovation, and entrepreneurship were on the agenda as Consul General Melissa Sweeney welcomed founders, investors, and business leaders from the Electrify Aotearoa conference and AmCham Women in Business to the Consul General’s Residence.

As we celebrate Freedom 250 and 250 years of American independence, we reflected on the role innovation has played in driving economic growth, creating opportunity, and solving challenges - from the founding of the United States to the next generation of entrepreneurs building the future.

The United States and New Zealand share a strong tradition of innovation, and we look forward to continuing partnerships that support founders, strengthen commercial ties, and create new opportunities for collaboration across our innovation ecosystems.
