On June 14, 1942, the first U.S. Marines arrived in New Zealand.
What followed became known as the "Friendly Invasion" - a remarkable chapter in the shared history of the United States and New Zealand.
Between 1942 and 1944, more than 100,000 American Marines and servicemen passed through New Zealand. They were welcomed into homes, schools, sports clubs, and communities across the country, forging friendships that extended far beyond the war.
More than 80 years later, the stories of hospitality, camaraderie, and shared sacrifice continue to be remembered by both nations. The bonds formed during those years remain an enduring part of the U.S.-New Zealand partnership.
Join us in the video below, as we remember the arrival of the Marines on June 14, 1942, and celebrate a unique chapter in the friendship between our two countries.
