Te Whakarōpūtanga Kaitiaki Kura o Aotearoa - NZ School Boards Association

Te Whakarōpūtanga Kaitiaki Kura o Aotearoa - NZ School Boards Association Te Whakarōputanga Kaitiaki Kura o Aotearoa - New Zealand School Boards Association is the national organisation representing school board members across NZ.

The New Zealand School Trustees Association was established in 1989 with the introduction of “Tomorrow’s Schools”, initially being formed from the remnants of the old School Committees’ Federation (SCF), the Secondary School Boards’ Association (SSBA), and the Education Boards’ Association (EBA). Member boards of trustees took control of NZSTA following the inaugural AGM in May 1990 when member bo

ards adopted the first NZSTA constitution. Since 1990 member boards of trustees have “owned” and controlled NZSTA through a governing council/board elected by the membership.

Wondering how to use AI effectively and safely in your school?

AI has the potential to significantly reduce the time teachers and school leaders spend on planning, reporting, communications and administration — as well as supporting areas like lesson design, policy development, data analysis and strategic planning.

The challenge is knowing how to apply it in practice, and how to do so in line with your school’s legal and policy responsibilities.

We’ve developed a series of practical AI workshops for NZ schools:
Online workshop series (May–June):
• 9 x 60-minute evening sessions
• From quick wins and prompting through to lesson design, governance and risk
• Includes tools like AI assistants and a readiness snapshot for your school
• Flexible — attend one session or the full series

In-person intensive workshops:
• 2 x full-day, hands-on sessions
• Focused on strategy and practical implementation
• Walk away with a draft AI strategy, redesigned lessons, or practical tools you can use immediately
• Flexible — attend one day or both (one month apart).

Across both options, you’ll learn how to:
✔ Save time on planning, reporting & admin
✔ Apply AI to real, everyday tasks
✔ Support teaching and lesson design
✔ Develop draft policies, prompts and practical tools
✔ Use AI safely and in line with NZ legislation & NZQA guidance

ERO’s national insights centre is currently looking at the support and interventions that are available for schools, especially those that need it most. These short surveys for board members ask about how things are going at your school, anything that’s particularly challenging, and about supports the school may have received.
ERO will use the information they gather to recommend improvements, so it’s worth taking a few minutes to click through!
