Māori Association of Social Science (MASS)

Māori Association of Social Science (MASS) MASS is a collaboration among Māori social scientists at universities, wānanga and community sites throughout Aotearoa New Zealand.

The aim of MASS is to network with Māori social science researchers in their many settings, and to optimise their efforts as a contribution to Māori development and advancement. More active linkages and research relationships can improve the outcomes from our small, scattered, but growing workforce by enhancing capability-building, generating research clusters and providing the benefit of collecti

ve voice on issues of importance to Māori and social science. It arose out of an identified need for better networking at researcher level within the tertiary sector to enhance the work of Māori social science for our communities.

From Professor Tahu Kukutai:
No official iwi/tribal data to be released from Census 2018! Having worked with numerous iwi on demographic projects using Census data, this iwi data black hole from Census 2018 will have significant and ongoing impacts.

Karen Vercoe, chairwoman of Data Iwi Leaders Group, said Stats NZ and the Government must take urgent action to remedy the "incredibly disappointing" gap in iwi affiliation data.

"Iwi statistics are critical for iwi to be able to assess the current and future needs and aspirations of their tribal members, to make decisions for and with our people and place, and to measure the impact of our investments," she said.

The Government will spend another $6 million to fix the broken national survey, which failed to gather iwi affiliation data.

"...if you established family-like relationships in your classroom, you’d be able to do the job of teaching effectively. And, if you did the job of teaching effectively, Māori kids would achieve. We showed that was absolutely true.

The education system kept excusing itself for not doing the best it could for Māori kids by blaming Māori kids themselves.

TMR has released a statement on Census 2018:

'Census 2018 may yet turn out to be the poorest quality enumeration of Māori in recent history'.

'Giving Māori a real say over how our data are collected, managed and analysed is essential for maintaining trust and confidence in the census and the Official Statistics System more broadly'.
