37 years ago, on 4 June 1989, the first partially free legislative elections took place Poland. 🇵🇱
🗳️ These elections marked a turning point in the country's history, signifying a crucial shift from communism to democracy and leaving a profound impact on the political landscape of Central and Eastern Europe.

For decades, Poland had been under communist rule since the end of WWII, with the Polish United Workers' Party (PZPR) holding a tight grip on power and control over political and social aspects of life. However, mounting discontent, economic challenges, and both domestic and international pressure paved the way for change.

Although the communist party retained control over key institutions and maintained an advantage, the elections introduced an unprecedented element of competition and choice for voters. The opposition movement, led by “Solidarność”, was allowed to field candidates for the Sejm and contested 35% of the seats, while the remaining seats were reserved for the communist party and its allies.

🫂 After Russia attacked Ukraine, 1.73 million Ukrainian refugees received legal protection and financial support in Poland. Many of them seniors.

The 🇵🇱🇺🇦 Seniors' Club in Rzeszów and Małgorzata Cisek-Kozieł, its coordinator, have been bringing together seniors from Poland and Ukraine since July 2023. They get together, talk and connect through a variety of activities.

For 70-year-old Vasyl, who fled Ukraine in 2022 with his daughter and granddaughter, the Club has become much more than just a meeting place.

Today, both Małgorzata and Vasyl are on the Rzeszów Seniors' Council playing an active role in the life of the city.

Because support is also built through connection and belonging! 🇵🇱🤝🇺🇦
