Chainsaw operation is this weeks quiz! https://nz-fire-brigades-institute.involve.me/nzfbi-quiz-chainsaw-operation
Fancy yourself as a bit of an arborist, or are you more of a weekend warrior? Chainsaws can be dangerous in the wrong hands or if used unsafely - I really wanted to post some nasty photos I found on Google of some injuries, but let's leave that to your own choice to search up those....
Instead, lets just be glad we generally dont play the American style of roof ventilation/putting firefighters on the roof type techniques. We're more likely to use them for downed trees, vegetation firefighting or maybe for opening up a wall in a structure fire.

Out and about today presenting as a guest speaker at the Auckland Provincial Fire Brigades Association AGM in Silverdale. Congratulations on 125 years of service to your member brigades.

The conference theme was "Consolidation", the upcoming exams we have planned for release and quizzes are on point for the theme, consolidating our knowledge helping to make our firefighter team better for those we serve.

A fantastic day engaging with the delegates and sharing our suite of digitals tools and resources made by firefighters for firefighters

A pinch and a punch for the first of the month...but lets get into one of our most popular quizzes that has just had an overhaul - IS1 Operational Safety and the SPC.

Great wet night quiz to cover off, but also a really important one - we're also hearing this is one that many STC's are emailing out for their brigade to do so you can spend that precious training time working on the drill ground rather than doing paperwork!

In April 2026, the UFBA, alongside the New Zealand Fire Brigades' Institute Inc and the Institution of Fire Engineers New Zealand Branch, submitted a joint paper to Parliament’s Governance and Administration Select Committee informing their public inquiry about FENZ fleet management.

Yesterday, the submission was spoken to at the Select Committee meeting by UFBA CE, Bill Butzbach and President of the IFE New Zealand Branch, Scott Lanauze.

Our message is clear: New Zealand needs a modern, reliable, fit-for-purpose emergency response fleet that reflects today’s risks and tomorrow’s challenges.

The submission highlighted concerns around appliance reliability, delays in getting vehicles operational, and the condition of parts of the relief fleet - while recognising the opportunity for a broader rethink of how fleet is planned, procured and managed, and importantly, that fleet decisions must reflect community risk and operational need.

The submission calls for:
🚒 Risk-based fleet planning
🚒 Better long-term replacement and maintenance strategies
🚒 Stronger governance and accountability
🚒 Improved operational readiness
🚒 A future-focused approach to climate, urban growth, and all-hazards response

The UFBA, NZFBI and IFE NZ Branch are committed to working alongside FENZ and stakeholders, as trusted sector experts, to help shape a fleet system that keeps firefighter's safe and communities protected.
