From 1 May 2026, new Rule 3A of the Health Information Privacy Code requires a health agency that collects health information about an individual, from someone other than that individual, to take reasonable steps to ensure the individual is aware of that collection.
This has particular relevance for private anaesthetists. In routine practice, anaesthetists may receive clinical information before having direct contact with the patient.

Written for the NZSA, the Medical Protection Society has provided advice specifically for anaesthetists on how the new rule may apply and some recommended actions. Read more on Te Puna Kairehu [https://kairehu.anaesthesia.nz/ipp3a]

Healthcare is a high-consequence, high-risk industry, probably the most complex human work endeavour that has ever existed – yet it remains one of the least engaged with the scientific discipline designed to help manage that risk: Human Factors and Ergonomics.
CSC2026 Keynote speaker, Professor Paul Bowie, highlights how Human Factors are even more useful than you think and some helpful free resources you can utilise ahead of congress in this early issue article from the August issue of Te Puna Kairehu.
