Do you live in the Hutt Valley? The Hutt City Council are looking for people with experience of disability and/or aging to join a new accessibility advisory group. Here's more information and how to apply:

We’re looking for people with lived experience of ageing and/or disability to join a new Age and Accessibility Advisory Group.

The group will provide advice and lived-experience perspectives to help inform Council planning, policies, projects, and services.

We're looking for people who:

▪️ Live in Lower Hutt.
▪️ Are 65+ and/or have lived experience of disability.
▪️ Care about accessibility and inclusion.
▪️ Are connected to their communities.

Meetings will be held around four times a year. You can apply online at hutt.city/advisory-group

You can also pick up a paper application from your local neighbourhood hub.

Mr David Corner, of Wellington, ONZM for services to people with intellectual and learning disabilities

Mr David Corner has been a National Self Advocate Advisor with IHC New Zealand for 29 years, drawing on his own experience with an intellectual disability and Autism. He was involved with deinstitutionalisation of people with intellectual disabilities from large-scale institutions in the early 2000s. He is a member of the New Zealand Disability Strategy employment working group and was on the Association of Supported Employment New Zealand and Community Connections Boards. He chairs the IHC CEO Advisory Committee and was Inclusion International’s Asia-Pacific representative. He is a Life Member of People First New Zealand and Inclusion International. He is on Te Rōpū Kaiārahi Hauātanga, the Chief Ombudsman’s Disability Advisory panel. Mr Corner co-authored an international journal chapter about the effectiveness of Easy Read information for people with learning disabilities.

Award-winning filmmaker Jared Flitcroft (Ngāti Maniapoto) has been awarded the Deaf and Disabled Artists Fellowship 2026 to explore NZSL as a cinematic language.

Based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Jared's work spans writing, directing and performance, bringing together te ao Māori, Deaf culture and visual storytelling.

“My kaupapa is to expand what cinema can look and feel like when it is led by Deaf and Māori worldviews rather than shaped by hearing norms.”

Turi Māori filmmaker Jared Flitcroft is the recipient of the Whakahoa Kaitoi Whanaketanga Creative New Zealand Deaf and Disabled Artists Fellowship 2026, presented by Arts Access Aotearoa.

We're excited to hear about this great initiative to help young disabled people get valuable work experience!

There is just ONE WEEK to go until our first annual Open Doors Day! Our next participant highlight on the countdown to Open Doors Day is Amy from Auckland.

Our newest project, Open Doors Day, encourages businesses from across the motu to open their doors to a disabled employee for a day. Because it shouldn't be ODD to see disabled youth in employment!
This allows I.Lead members the opportunity to enter an industry they are interested in, volunteering their time for a day.

For Open Doors Day, Amy is passionate about graphic design. She will spend the day with Benefitz, getting behind-the-scenes knowledge of the design and printed advertising industry.

With a focus on empowering both rangatahi whaikaha and businesses, Open your Doors Day (ODD) will be an annual initiative, proving that hiring disabled people does not have to be scary or odd. Keep an eye on our socials to see the results of our first annual Open Doors Day!
