Today is the start of Schools' Pride Week, where we celebrate our rainbow staff and students in Aotearoa New Zealand 🌈

This isn't mandatory. It's an optional way kura can champion inclusion and kindness, and promote a sense of belonging for LGBTQIA+ ākonga, staff and whānau.

One of the ideas for high school students is creating an erasure, or blackout, poem:

"Find or print out some old out of date literature around gender and sexuality and, using the blackout/erasure method, create some affirming poetry! You can also do this with fun quotes, book excerpts, scripts or song lyrics."

Pictured is a poem created from the first page of The Whale Rider by q***r author, Witi Ihimaera (Te Aitanga-a-Māhaki). This is a book excerpt example, as opposed to repurposed out of date literature.

Rangatahi Māori in Te Upoko-o-Te-Ika will soon have greater access to science, technology, engineering, mathematics and mātauranga (STEMM) pathways, following the arrival of Pūhoro STEMM Academy (Pūhoro) in the region.

Established in response to the need for stronger Māori representation and achievement in STEMM, Pūhoro supports rangatahi Māori to pursue STEMM education and career pathways in these fields.

Now operating in its 14th region across Aotearoa, Pūhoro marked this milestone in April with a launch to celebrate its new regional partnership with Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, bringing together ākonga, kaiako, iwi, schools and kura.

Across Te Whanganui-a-Tara and Wairarapa, Pūhoro will partner with eight secondary schools: Newlands College, Te Kura Māori o Porirua, Wairarapa College, Wainuiomata College, Tawa College, Mana College, Kuranui College and Hutt Valley High School.

“Pūhoro instilled in me a belief that I didn’t have to ‘fit in’ to gain a seat at the table, instead they taught me to be unapologetically Māori, to carry my values, my language, and my community into whatever I do," says Aria McKee (Ngāti Porou), a Pūhoro alumna and newly appointed Kaihautū for Pūhoro in Te Upoko-o-Te-Ika.

The New Zealand Curriculum and Te Marautanga o Aotearoa are being refreshed, and we’d love to get your thoughts on the draft subjects for Years | Tau 11-13.

As there are so many subjects, the consultation is taking place in three groups. The second group of subjects in the new curriculum is now available for you to review and provide your feedback. This consultation round is open until 8 July 2026.

Information about the draft subjects and how to be involved in the consultation is available on the Tāhūrangi website: https://newzealandcurriculum.tahurangi.education.govt.nz/phase-5-consultation

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
The first group of subjects closes on 15 June, and we will be opening the third group up for feedback in mid-July. All feedback received will be carefully considered before the new curriculum is finalised.

We greatly appreciate everyone who takes the time to share their views. Your feedback is a critical part of shaping a strong and inclusive curriculum for all learners.

Did you know ... the National Library of New Zealand has a free, online chat service that helps Aotearoa New Zealand school-aged students with their research?

AnyQuestions connects a student, or an entire classroom, with a librarian somewhere in Aotearoa New Zealand.

The librarian will then help them unpack their topic, and share tips about keywords and evaluating online information.

It's all about teaching students to be competent, independent researchers who can find reliable and relevant information for themselves.

They also have a collection of resources on popular topics, called Many Answers, divided by year level.

For example, "Where can I find information about the nuclear-free movement in New Zealand?" ➡️ https://anyquestions.govt.nz/many-answers/nuclear-free-new-zealand

Ehara a Te Reo Rangatira i te wāhanga ako noa iho – ko te whakaaro, ko te rongo me te whai māramatanga ki tōna aronga o te ao.

E whakaakohia ana ki te nuinga o ngā kura arareo Māori me ngā kura auraki hoki hei wāhanga o Te Marautanga o Aotearoa, ā, he whakatau tūāpapa e angitu ai ngā whanaketanga reo matatini me te angitu o ngā mahi akoranga.

____

Te Reo Rangatira is not simply a wāhanga ako – it’s how mokopuna think, feel, and make sense of the world.

It’s now taught in most Māori-medium kura and schools as part of Te Marautanga o Aotearoa and lays the foundation for advanced literacy and academic success.

Through Te Reo Rangatira, mokopuna are equipped to understand their world, to speak with clarity and mana, and to walk with confidence into wharekura and beyond.

____

Today we acknowledge the passing of Emeritus Professor Whatarangi Winiata, a deeply respected Ngāti Raukawa leader, educator, scholar and advocate for te reo Māori whose contributions leave a lasting footprint on education in Aotearoa.

Professor Winiata dedicated his life to advancing educational opportunities for Māori and supporting the revitalisation of te reo Māori through leadership and service. With a long list of lifetime achievements, Professor Winiata held various academic leadership roles and received numerous awards for his contributions to education, te reo Māori, and te ao Māori.

Of note is his key role in Whakatupuranga Rua Mano – Generation 2000, the intergenerational tribal development strategy focused on the wealth and potential embodied in the peoples of Ngāti Raukawa, Te Āti Awa, and Ngāti Toarangatira. This kaupapa resulted in the establishment of Te Wānanga o Raukawa, Te Kura-ā-Iwi o Whakatupuranga Rua Mano and paved the way for multiple kura, rumaki reo and kōhanga reo in Ōtaki, which is now considered one the most prominent hubs in Aotearoa for te reo Māori and bilingual education.

We extend our deep condolences to his whānau, Ngāti Raukawa, and all those who knew and worked alongside Emeritus Professor Whatarangi Winiata.

Haere ki ōu mātua tūpuna kua riro atu ki te pō. Mahue iho ko mātou katoa o te ao Māori e tangi nei, e auē nei.
