The New Zealand–United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement entered its fourth year this month. The agreement continues to deliver for New Zealand businesses, with total trade with the United Kingdom reaching a record NZ$7.4 billion in 2025. Around 91.5% of goods traded made use of preferential tariffs where available in the same year.

At the start of June, Minister for Trade and Investment Todd McClay met with his UK counterpart, Secretary of State Peter Kyle, for the third Joint Committee in London. Together, they reaffirmed the importance of a strong multilateral trading system in an increasingly complex global environment and signed a new Double Tax Agreement to better promote cross-border trade and investment between the United Kingdom and New Zealand.

With the recent expansion of e-commerce and the digital economy in Indonesia 🇮🇩, Bank Indonesia introduced the QRIS (Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard), a national, standardised QR code payment system that enables customers to pay merchants instantly and has quickly become the most widespread retail payment method in Indonesia.

QRIS is one important indicator of the role of both Indonesia and Southeast Asia as a growing hub of digital innovation. As the digital economy grows in importance across the region, so too do the opportunities for New Zealand 🇳🇿 companies.

New Zealand 🇳🇿 and Chile 🇨🇱 have agreed to establish Joint Trade and Economic Consultations, to be held in person at senior officials’ level approximately every two years.

Building on 80 years of diplomatic relations in 2025, the consultations will advance New Zealand and Chile’s long-standing tradition of cooperation in shaping innovative trade frameworks, and complement our shared focus on economic growth, investment, and open competitive markets

The new mechanism was announced in the margins of APEC China 2026 in the presence of New Zealand Minister for Trade and Investment, Todd McClay, and Chile Undersecretary for International Economic Relations, Paula Estévez.
