🌿 Welcoming "Kākāriki" to Our Kura 🌿
Today, we had the privilege of welcoming Whaea Nan Walden-Moeung and her whānau to our kura to accept a deeply significant gift—a stunning korowai named "Kākāriki" which Nan has woven for our school community.

To Nan and your whānau: thank you for entrusting “Kākāriki” to our care. We are humbled beyond words by your beautiful gift. ❤️

The Story Behind "Kākāriki"
Nan has been waiting for the perfect moment to gift "Kākāriki", a korowai she constructed for Kuranui College in loving memory of her grandparents, Marge and Bruce Greene.

Her family history here runs deep:

Her grandfather, Bruce Greene, taught at Kuranui for 30 years. 👨‍🏫

Her grandmother, Marge Greene, was the school librarian for 6 years. 📚

It recently came to Nan's attention that the Papawai & Kaikōkirikiri Trust administers a fund set up by her late grandparents. It was a very proud and emotional moment for her whānau to discover that this fund will go directly toward assisting Kuranui College Kapa Haka students with the purchase and maintenance of their kākahu (clothing).

Nan recently graduated with a Master of Māori Visual Arts / Design, where she wore "Kākāriki"—giving the garment its own unique mauri (life force), wairua (spirit), and mana. 🎓✨

Today, Nan and her family—including Marge and Bruce's children (who are all ex-students!): Candy, Jann, and David—returned to Kuranui College to hand over "Kākāriki" to the school’s Kapa Haka rōpū as its kaitiaki (guardians). Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa.

On Tuesday, we had the privilege of attending a reception at Government House as part of the Strengthening Democracy project that Angus, Ella, Evelyn and Joaquin have been involved in. They have attended a series of workshops in Wellington this semester and this weekend will present their project at Victoria University. The project aims to increase understanding of democracy, its strengths and weaknesses, and to encourage active participation in the democratic process; a great extension opportunity for any Year 13 student interested in politics and policy.
