What is toi?

It's a simple question, but one that doesn't always have a simple answer.

For Hāniko Te Kurapa and Paula Carr, understanding toi begins with understanding its whakapapa, the people behind it, and the aspirations of ringa toi Māori across Aotearoa.

The link below shares the whakaaro behind Toi Ora and the journey that helped shape Creative New Zealand's strategy for Ngā Toi Māori. The artwork created by Regan Balzer sits at the heart of the strategy.

One started carving from a kitchen table in Christchurch with little more than a G-clamp. The other discovered clay while planning a return home to the East Coast.

Decades later, both have helped shape Ngā Toi Māori in Aotearoa.
