Public consultation is now open on the design of the next census. We want to hear your thoughts about the information that matters to you, and your communities.

We’re moving towards a modernised census that uses administrative data (information already collected by other government agencies) supported by a new annual survey and other tailored solutions.

This change means we’ll be able to deliver insights more often, and in a way that’s more sustainable.

Feedback is open until 5pm, Friday 19 December 2025.

The second release of 2023 Census data has arrived!

Now, you can learn more about how Aotearoa New Zealand has changed since 2018. Whether you want to check out the finer details on Aotearoa Data Explorer or see what Aotearoa New Zealand looks like as a village of 100 people, it’s ready for you to explore.

Talofa lava! It’s Samoa Language Week!

Gagana Samoa is the 3rd most spoken language in Aotearoa according to data from the 2018 Census.

Wednesday 28th May will see the first release of the 2023 Census. Stay tuned for all the awesome data that will be released.
