Graphic but important reminder. The photo is confronting — but this is the reality our Rangers face.
Every now and then our Rangers and contractors have to empty toilet containment tanks at our huts. Atiwhakatu is a well‑loved spot, so this job happens every year.
What’s making the job much harder?
Around a third of the tank is filled with rubbish.
That includes plastics, nappies, wet wipes, alcohol bottles, even full bags of trash.
This causes real issues for the crews doing the mahi: blocked pumps and hoses, sewage spills on the ground, and extra time and cost to get everything flown out and disposed of properly.
A massive shout‑out to everyone who packs out their rubbish — you’re absolute legends.
If you’re using the toilet as a rubbish bin, please do better. Pack it out, protect the hut, and look after the people who look after these places.

Fair to say our Rangers are gutted.

They were stoked to have this table installed and ready for summer family picnics.

Less than two days later, it's been vandalised, with a large chunk of timber stolen.

It's a selfish act, robbing the community of a picnic table in a popular local site.

If you saw a vehicle carrying a large table-top on Tuesday or Wednesday, please contact the Police.

The destruction and theft of a newly-installed picnic table at Bucks Road Campsite has shocked and disappointed the Wairarapa community.

The New Zealand Mountain Safety Council have released a series of videos to help you 'know before you go' on popular walks across the country. Check out the one below on the Mt Holdsworth – Jumbo Circuit, a classic overnight or weekend tramp in the Tararua Forest Park, just north of Masterton.

Known for its ridgeline views and well-maintained tracks, it’s popular with experienced trampers, school groups, and well-prepared families.

The video takes you around the full circuit, starting at Holdsworth Lodge, climbing via Gentle Annie Track to Powell Hut, crossing the open tops past Mount Holdsworth trig and Jumbo Peak, and descending to Jumbo Hut and out via the Raingauge Track.

It also highlights key hazard points, especially the exposed alpine section between Powell and Jumbo, where poor visibility or high winds can make travel dangerous.

Check it out if Mt Holdsworth is on your list this summer!

For ALL of the Wellington District (including Kapiti and the Wairarapa), Fire and Emergency NZ have enforced a total ban on ALL OUTDOOR FIRES AND FIREWORKS - from midday yesterday until 8.00am on Monday, 27 October 2025. People planning outdoor activities over the long weekend should remember that ALL campfires and bonfires are prohibited.

🟠FIREWORKS - We recognise that letting off fireworks as part of Diwali celebrations is significant and we appreciate the community following the ban on fireworks at this time – thank you.

If you see or hear fireworks being used it can be reported via the Police non-emergency line – Call 105. If Fireworks start a fire, call 111 and ask for FIRE.

🟠BURN PILES - Anyone who has had an outdoor fire since the beginning of September is asked to go and check that it is completely out. If you see any sign of heat or smoke, please act immediately to fully wet down the site. If this is not possible, call 111 so that firefighters can assist.

🟠NO POWER - If your power is out, the use of gas BBQs in residential areas as a means of cooking is permitted. BBQs must be used outside away from vegetation on a flat, solid surface and supervised at all times. Do not use outdoor cooking equipment inside.

Phil Soal, Wellington Community Risk Manager, says to ease the load on their firefighters we need the public’s help following this ‘Total Fire and Fireworks Ban’.

*********************************************************************
Fire and Emergency New Zealand’s Wellington District have enforced a total ban on outdoor fires and fireworks from midday today until 8am on Monday 27 October.

It comes as winds are forecast to exceed 100km/hr in many places, with high temperatures and low humidity creating very high fire risk conditions.

On Tuesday firefighters were stretched across the Wellington region, including the Wairarapa and Kapiti Coast, responding to weather-related callouts.

The prohibition means no new outdoor fires can be lit. People must also check their previous burns for signs of reignition.

Wellington Community Risk Manager Phil Soal says the community can also help by refraining from letting off fireworks as part of Diwali celebrations while the fireworks ban is in place.

"People planning outdoor activities over the long weekend should remember that all campfires and bonfires are also prohibited," he says.

The prohibitions are in addition to the ones in place in Hawke's Bay, Marlborough, Canterbury and Mid-South Canterbury for the same time period.
