Mahurangi College

On Tuesday, our choir Resonance proudly represented Mahurangi College at the Big Sing Choir Festival in Auckland.

Formed at the beginning of this year, the choir performed “Some Nights”, “Eiki koe ’Ofa ‘A’au”, and “All My Trials”. A highlight of the day was performing “Some Nights” at the evening Gala Concert in the Auckland Town Hall, featuring soloists Ma’ata, Taenoa, Jemima, and Inoke, with the packed audience clapping along.

The students had an absolute blast throughout the day and were buzzing after their performance.

A special thank you to directors Emma Pearson, Anna Logue, and Jenny Eirena, and piano accompanist Sue Elliott for their dedication and support.

On Monday dancers from Momentum, Impulse and Impulse Jr Troupe went to the Velocity Interschool Dance Competition. It was a fun filled day full of workshops and rehearsals followed by the competition gala in the evening. We are so proud to report the following results from the day:

On Friday Momentum Dance Company competed at the National Dance Challenge in the Secondary School divisions. They were awarded 2nd place in the Jazz category with their dance "Starman" and 4th place in Contemporary with "Somebody". Congratulations Momentum!

On Tuesday Mahurangi travelled to Ngatea for the 63rd annual sports exchange with Hauraki Plains College - a long-standing tradition that was established around 1962. This year nine teams were competing to help the Mahu win the Mahuraki Trophy for the sixth consecutive year.

Our students represented the school impeccably, with hard-fought matches played in good spirits and with excellent sportsmanship. A huge thank you to our staff and parents that travelled to support these premier winter teams, and to our sports department for their organisation and effort in ensuring the exchange is a successful and positive experience for our athletes. Finally, thank you to Hauraki Plains for your hospitality and organisation across the two days. The overall result was a resounding 7-2 win, with the individual match results below.

Basketball - girls won 44-41, boys won 102-47
Football - girls won 7-0, boys won 6-0
Hockey - girls won 5-0, boys lost 3-2
Netball - girls won 41-18
Rugby - girls lost 26-22, boys won 47-0

Proudly introducing our premier winter sports captains for 2026. Congratulations to this group of athletes who have been chosen to lead our teams this season.

Next week these premier teams travel to Ngatea for the annual Hauraki Plains exchange. Beyond the competitive mid-season fixtures, this traditional fixture is a fantastic opportunity for our players to experience billeting and build lasting connections with players from other schools. We thank all the staff involved for their commitment to ensuring this is a positive and valuable experience for our students.

This year we have nine teams involved - we wish them all the best as they look to retain the Mahuraki Trophy for the sixth consecutive year.

Living Classroom Wetland Planting and Restoration Working Bee
Last Thursday, over 70 keen students, volunteers from the community and our dedicated staff team got stuck into our working bee; planting, guarding and pest plant removal. The day was gorgeous, the work was solid. Our students from year 7 to 13 alongside the planting, removed a lot of privet, some of which were not small! The ongoing pest plant removal is as much a part of restoration as is the planting.
Love the gusto they bring to the mahi and the commitment to restoration work. Thanks to Momo for the photos.
