🐾ARE YOU READY FOR A DOG? 🐾
Dogs are a great addition to your life and your family. However, they are the most expensive household pet. If you’re thinking about getting a new furry friend to have around the house, here are a few costs you need to take into consideration.

🚨EMERGENCY MOBILE ALERT🚨
An Emergency Mobile Alert (EMA) will be sent nationwide on Sunday 14 June between 6pm-7pm to all capable phones and other SIM-connected devices (e.g. smart watches with an activated SIM card).

Emergency Mobile Alerts are messages about emergencies sent by authorised emergency agencies, and are one of many channels to help keep you safe in an emergency. It does not replace other alerting systems.

Every year the mobile alert system gets tested to make sure the system is working well.

🌟 MANAWATIA A MATARIKI, WAIROA! 🌟

What a night.

Without a doubt, this was one of the biggest and best Matariki celebrations Wairoa has seen yet. From the moment the gates opened until the final fireworks lit up the sky, our community came together to celebrate, connect, remember and look forward.

We estimate that around 1,500 people joined us throughout the evening, creating an atmosphere that was truly special. Seeing tamariki, rangatahi, whānau and kaumātua all enjoying the kaupapa together is exactly what Matariki is about.

A huge thank you to our event partners and sponsors who helped make this possible. Sport Hawke’s Bay Wairoa HOP Team, CLM, Wairoa Community Centre, Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated, the Department of Internal Affairs, Wairoa Taiwhenua, and Te Puni Kōkiri. Your support allows events like this to happen for our community.

Special thanks also to our incredible volunteers who stayed behind to help clean up. Your contribution is appreciated.

To our MC, Chaans Tumataroa-Clarke, thank you for bringing energy, humour and heart to the evening. You kept the crowd engaged from start to finish.

To all of our performers, thank you for sharing your talents with us. You were absolutely awesome. From the music and entertainment to the cultural performances, you helped create an atmosphere that was vibrant, uplifting and uniquely Wairoa. The crowd loved every minute of it.

A very special acknowledgement goes to His Worship Mayor Craig Little, who presented a taonga to Te Rangi Huata of Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated. Te Rangi has been the driving force behind Matariki celebrations in Wairoa for many years. Without his dedication, passion and commitment to this kaupapa, we simply would not have the special Matariki celebrations that our community enjoys today.

We also acknowledge the wider Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated team who travelled to Wairoa and worked tirelessly behind the scenes to support the kaupapa.

To our vendors, thank you for providing great kai, products and experiences. To our sound, technology and fireworks crews, thank you for creating a memorable experience. To our Parakore team, security staff and clean-up crews, thank you for helping ensure the event was safe, welcoming and environmentally responsible.

And finally, thank you to our community. Your participation, smiles, laughter and support are what make events like this worthwhile.

Wairoa showed up, celebrated together and made memories that will last well beyond Matariki.

Mānawatia a Matariki. ✨

🍿🎬 THE MATARIKI MOVIE NIGHT HAS STARTED!

A great crowd of tamariki and whanau have settled in nice and comfortably at the Wairoa Community Centre this evening, and Zootopia 2 is now underway.

There’s still time to come along, support the event, and grab a kai while enjoying a great family movie night with the community.

It’s awesome to see whanau and their tamariki enjoying the evening together.

A huge thank you to Sport Hawke’s Bay Wairoa, CLM, Wairoa Community Centre and Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated for helping make tonight possible for our community.

We hope everyone enjoys the movie!

🎆PETS & FIREWORKS🎆
It’s very important we look after our pets when there are fireworks around as they can get frightened.

Scared pets will try to run away and hide. Be extra careful by keeping your pets inside or lock them in a safe and secure place where they can't escape.

In case you’re taking your dog out for a walk during the day or evening, remember to keep them on a lead. This also ensures your dog can't run away if it gets spooked.

If you would like more information the team is always happy to help. Head over to www.wairoadc.govt.nz or get in touch with our Compliance Team via phone or email.

🐾 OUT AND ABOUT WITH YOUR PET 🐾
Exercise is an important part of owning a dog. There are a few things to keep in mind when out and about with your pet. Keep your dog close when you pass other people even if your dog has great recall and rarely leaves your side. You want to respect other people’s personal space. If your dog is reactive or nervous around other dogs or people, cross the street to give everyone more space.

🟠ON-LEAD AREAS
Dogs should be kept on a lead on streets within any residential or commercial area and all public spaces.

🟢OFF-LEAD AREAS
There are a few off-lead areas in the district to let your beloved pooch run free. These are:
- Old landfill site at Fraser Street
- Whakamahia Road reserve from the end of the limestone walkway to the estuary excluding the DOC land that is fenced off
- Pilot’s Hill reserve

🔴PROHIBITED AREAS
All dogs with the exception of Disability Assist Dogs are prohibited from certain areas in our district such as schools and early childhood centres, playgrounds and sports facilities.

To learn more about these areas head head to www.wairoadc.govt.nz/services/animal-education/animal-control
