Woodland Hills, Central Hawke's Bay

Woodland Hills, Central Hawke's Bay Woodland Hills is an 18ha rural property planted in predominantly deciduous trees, selected for their autumn colour.

In Spring our flowering cherries put on a lovely display. Open by appointment for a wander through the trees or simply to sit on the lawn and enjoy the peaceful view.

We are making the most of this good weather to get clean up jobs done. Yesterday I sneaked away and spent time planning a new track which will take walkers to the top of Ron's Hill where they will get a 360° view of Woodland Hills and surrounding farm land. We are looking forward to sharing it with you in Spring.

Twenty years ago we were fortunate to be given obsolete poultry cages which Ewan repurposed to be used as tree surrounds. This was a cost effective way of protecting new trees and has been a major contributor to the creation of Woodland Hills.

The cages have now completed their job here and recently a fellow tree grower from Waiwhare collected several truck loads. He plans to use them for his own planting and also to make them available to neighbour's.

This is a good example of something that had been destined for the landfill being redirected to contribute to environmental enhancement. We think it's a win win situation.

Who can remember their mother growing cotoneastet in the garden? It was easy to establish and didn't mind dry conditions. Now it is an awful plant pest with seed easily spread by birds. We have spent the last week cutting it out and spraying smaller infestations before they suffocate other plants. Sadly there are cotoneaster trees established on road verges so our chance of eradication is slim but we are determined to deal to it.

Scrambling around the hillside spraying spots for planting totara and kowhai. We don't need gym memberships at Woodland Hills. Or maybe if I went to the gym the hills wouldn't be quite so steep.

It was nice yesterday to have someone who visited on 3 May return with her sister from Brisbane to see the trees. It was a dismal day but the liquidambers and swamp cypress put on a show. We are always happy for people to come for a walk. Just send a message or call first to make sure we are here.
