NZ Civil Defence will be conducting the annual nationwide test of the Emergency Mobile Alert (EMA) system between 6pm and 7pm this Sunday.
An alert will be sent to all capable phones and other SIM-connected devices.

📱 The Emergency Mobile Alert system is tested each year as a necessary part of ensuring it works effectively across the country.

⚠️️ Emergency Mobile Alerts are messages about emergencies sent by authorised agencies. They are one of many channels used to help keep you safe and do not replace other alerting systems.

➡ Some emergency events don’t allow enough time for an official warning to be sent. If you feel your life is in danger, do not wait for an alert—take immediate action.

🔕 You can mute the sound of the alert using the volume button on the side of your phone. This will leave the message on screen for you to read in full.

➡ If you have a hidden phone for personal safety, or if the alert sound may affect your physical or mental health, we recommend turning off any SIM-connected devices between 6–7pm on Sunday 14 June, or putting them into flight mode.

Kia ora Waipukurau,

We’re kicking off phase one of the project to install 1.3km of wastewater pipes for Waipukurau South Growth Precinct.

You’ll see us digging up Jull Crescent and Albert Street from 15 June for a week. The roads will be closed, except to residents, to keep everyone safe.

Our contractors, Fulton Hogan, have done a letter drop to the affected houses.

We’ll be laying the wastewater pipe until the end of the year, that’s because this is a huge project that sets up Central Hawke’s Bay for the future.

It’s a $3.4m project paid for through rates ($1.16m) development contribution ($1.381m) and government’s National Infrastructure Funding and Finance organisation ($1.16m).

Central Hawke’s Bay, YOUR councils are changing and we want YOU to have a say.

We need to hear from you to help shape what happens in Central Hawke's Bay, Mayor Will Foley says.

“We need to work together. We need to be part of creating what local government looks like for us and be at the table so Central Hawke's Bay is reflected in what comes next.”

We will be announcing community meetings shortly.

Heads up to our coastal communities.
We're expecting some high swells that will peak around 7-8 metres Tuesday afternoon, easing Wednesday afternoon. Keep an eye on MetService New Zealand for updates.

A cold front moves north over the country on Monday, delivering cooler temperatures and showers to parts of the South Island and lower North Island. Behind it, a ridge of high-pressure builds, leading to several days of settled weather.

The cold front will also generate hazardous marine conditions, with large, long-period southerly swells affecting the eastern coastlines from Otago to Gisborne. Long-period swells carry more energy, allowing waves to travel further inland and surge higher up beaches than usual. These conditions may cause significant coastal impacts, including ferry cancellations, road closures, and, in some locations, evacuations. People in affected areas should follow advice from local authorities.

Heavy Swell Warnings are in place until mid-Wednesday.

Update: 3:45pm

The approach to Rabbit Bridge was assessed by a structural engineer today, unfortunately it cannot be reopened to heavy vehicles at this stage.

We’re working on the best way to repair the approach to the bridge, this will take some time, traffic management will remain in place.

We will be working to provide a more detailed update to local trucking companies, the school and directly affected residents.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………
We’ve had a better look at what’s going on at Rabbit Bridge on Atua Road, Elsthorpe. The issue is bigger than anticipated, as a precaution we’re closing the bridge to heavy vehicles, single lane for light vehicles only. Please take extra care and adhere to traffic management.

Rabbit bridge is located at the 4.6km mark on Atua Road.
We’ll provide an update this afternoon.
