4 A Better City is an Upper Hutt based charity. We are committed to connecting with community groups, businesses, and individuals with a common purpose, to improve the social, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being of the people of Upper Hutt
Some of the ways we are doing this is by:
Engaging with the community to build

relationships and discover the issues. Equipping people and organisations in Upper Hutt with the tools to become a stronger community. Exploring with those individuals who are interested, how they can improve their social, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being.

In just 3 months, we’ve harvested 600kg of organic produce from our Mahinga Kai Urban Farm, including 385kg donated to Ōrongomai Marae, Upper Hutt to help feed our community 💚

Our secret? Regenerative growing that works with nature.
Healthy microbe-rich soil, composting, mulching, and planting multiple crops = more food in less space.

Respect and serving others are core values in Samoan culture, commonly demonstrated through the cultural practice of "tau momoli ma laulau le taumafataga" - young people preparing and serving the best food available to the leaders and elders in their community, before enjoying it themselves.

As part of our Samoan Language Week celebrations, some of our senior Dreamers (students) had the opportunity to participate in this tradition, while the rest of our tamariki enjoyed Samoan music and a meal together. Our junior Dreamers have also been learning a Samoan siva throughout the week.

A special shout-out to our Dreamer Lofi, whose ideas helped shape this year’s celebrations and inspired our Navigators (mentors) to help make it a memorable week for all involved.

A change of hours and an exciting new chapter ahead!
We’re not saying goodbye, but see you later to our wonderful Kai Kart team member Nathan.

Nathan joined us on a six-month workplace contract with MSD, and in that time, he’s mastered baking and cooking delicious mouth-watering treats and feasts, and making a seriously good cup of coffee.

Nathan has been a fantastic addition to the Kai Kart. Our customers will miss the can-do attitude and great conversations that he brought to every shift. We wish Nathan all the very best for his next adventure!

From Monday 8 June, we’ll be slightly adjusting our hours while we get back up to speed:
⚫Monday: 10am – 2pm
⚫Tuesday–Friday: 9am – 2pm

Talofa lava! Welcome to Samoan Language Week!

Our I Have a Dream Charitable Trust NZ tamariki have been busy learning about Samoan culture, language, and traditions, and they’re now preparing for a special performance we can’t wait to see!

Samoan Language Week is a celebration of the beautiful identity, culture, and language of Samoa here in Aotearoa. Did you know Samoan is the third most widely spoken language in New Zealand? We have over 100,000 speakers!

Here are a few Samoan phrases you can try this week:

✨ Fa‘afetai tele lava = Thank you very much
