Room 11 celebrated Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa by creating their own hand-crafted posters using coloured pencils, black Sharpie and felts. Students went on a journey of self-discovery and looked at Samoan design and patterns as well as the tropical landscape, using the bright colours of Samoa. Students took great pride in sketching their designs, which are primarily found in traditional tatau and siapo. The designs represent community status, courage and family genealogy.

In class, we learn about the Samoan culture by using phrases where students are able to understand basic commands, numbers and songs.

“Talofa aiga ma uō!” - Hello family and friends!

For Samoan Language Week, Room 3 listened to Samoan songs and we learned different Samoan phrases, words, colours, days of the week, and numbers to 10. We learned about the legend of the Turtle and the Shark and why the “Pasi” (bus) is so important to the Samoan people. We put our creativity to work in creating turtles and sharks, as well as painting our own Tokoroa Central School Express Pasi for the Samoan Language Week hall display. As part of our mahi, the learners had to draw a picture using Samoan words as a guide of what needs to be in the picture. We had a lot of fun learning about the Samoan language and culture.

“Toe feiloa'i!” - See you later!
