Behind every thriving community are people who simply roll up their sleeves and get on with it.

Board Chair Gavin Jeffcoat shares his gratitude for the local volunteers across Coromandel-Colville who get the job done without any fanfare ๐Ÿ‘‡

โ€œWe are so grateful and indebted to all those across our community who 'do the doing', thank you.

โ€œVolunteers are the cornerstone of a healthy community. Waiting for someone else to pick up the shovel, or the rubbish, or help the vulnerable wonโ€™t create the change our community needs.

"We are so grateful and indebted to all those across our community who do the doing, with little or no recognition. It is a privilege to say thank you.โ€

National Volunteer Week is taking place from 14โ€“20 June โ€” itโ€™s a time to recognise the people who help make our communities stronger, kinder and more connected.

Across our district, volunteers give their time, energy and care in countless ways โ€” supporting others, building connections and shaping the places weโ€™re proud to call home.

This yearโ€™s theme, Your Year to Volunteer โ€“ Tลu tau ki te tลซao, celebrates those already making a difference and encourages others to get involved.

Mayor Peter Revell shares a message of thanks to all our local volunteers across the district and the amazing collective contribution of their mahi ๐Ÿ‘‡

Thamesโ€‘Coromandel District Council extends its sincere condolences to the family of Gilbert James and to the wider marine farming community.

Mayor Peter Revell said Gilbertโ€™s passing would be deeply felt across the district. โ€œGilbert was a lifelong and dedicated member of the Coromandel, with deep roots here and an unwavering commitment to his community,โ€ Mayor Revell said. โ€œHis leadership and vision helped shape an industry that now plays a vital role in our local economy.โ€

A lifelong resident of Coromandel Town, Gilbert was a pioneering figure in the development of the regionโ€™s marine farming sector. In 1981, he convened the first meeting of mussel farming applicants, helping establish the Coromandel Marine Farmers Association, which he chaired for more than 40 years.

โ€œGilbert brought people together at a critical time and laid the foundations for a thriving aquaculture industry,โ€ Mayor Revell said. โ€œHis determination and collaborative approach set a standard that continues to benefit the Coromandel today.โ€

Through his work, Gilbert played a significant role in growing aquaculture into a key pillar of the districtโ€™s economy. His contributions extended beyond his own successful business, Gold Ridge Marine Farms, to regional and national leadership, including service on the Mussel Industry Advisory Council and as a founding director of Aquaculture New Zealand.

โ€œHis influence reached well beyond our district,โ€ Mayor Revell added. โ€œHe was a respected voice nationally, always advocating strongly for the marine farming community and its future.โ€

Gilbertโ€™s commitment to his community and industry was recognised by our Council with a Community Service Award in 2022 (pictured).

โ€œGilbertโ€™s passion, advocacy and generosity of spirit leave a lasting legacy,โ€ Mayor Revell said. โ€œHe will be remembered with great respect and gratitude for everything he contributed to the prosperity of the Coromandel and New Zealandโ€™s aquaculture sector.โ€

An important note from our friends at Department of Conservation - Hauraki-Coromandel. Make sure your voice is heard.

Reminder:

Weโ€™re proposing to remove two side tracks in the wider Mautohe Cathedral Cove area so we can focus on maintaining the main visitor experience. These smaller tracks are often damaged by weather, and it isnโ€™t practical or sustainable to keep repairing them.

Have your say, feedback closes 5pm, 19 June.
