Starting with the basics last Wednesday for our new recruits – learning about the portable pump and the delivery of water. Understanding how water gets from the source to the fireground is a fundamental skill and an important building block in every firefighter’s training. Great to see everyone getting hands-on and building their knowledge and confidence. 🚒💦

Last night’s BA training at Gisborne Fire Station saw our crew put through their paces in the BATB (Breathing Apparatus Training Building). Under the guidance of our trainer, we navigated tight spaces and challenging conditions while wearing BA, building confidence, teamwork, and familiarity with working in confined environments. A valuable night of learning and experience for everyone involved. 🚒💨 Thank you Ivan for giving up your evening to train us.

Unfortunately, there are no photos from inside the training building—our focus was on the training, not the camera!

Last night we made knots and lines a bit more interesting — and definitely more challenging! Great to see everyone putting their skills to the test, working together, and having a few laughs along the way. Always good to keep training practical, hands-on, and engaging 👨‍🚒🪢

Last night concluded our training with live fire scenario and the use of 🧯dry powder extinguishers. We then finished the evening with all operational crew becoming familiar with donning the working at heights harness and putting trust in our knots and lines skills. Great hands-on training night with plenty of practical learning and teamwork throughout…. and a laugh too, rescue of “Bob2.0”😁

Last week we focused on the theory — tonight we brought it to life 🔥

Our crew got hands-on with fire extinguishers, building confidence and sharpening the skills needed to respond safely and effectively.

We then moved into working at heights, getting familiar with harnesses, equipment, and practicing essential knots and lines — all about staying safe while supporting one another.

To finish the night, we used our Thermal Imaging Camera (TIC) to check our fire was fully extinguished and to identify any remaining heat sources — he mahi tino pai using technology to keep our community safe.

He wā whakangungu pai — another great training night strengthening our skills, teamwork, and readiness to serve our hapori 💪🚒
