Another mum in Labour is sharing how important ultrasound scans are during pregnancy. Remember, these scans help parents and medical professionals be ready in case intervention is needed, and that is a long-term cost saving if medical professionals are ready to go as soon as bub is born.

After I gave birth to my son in Auckland in 2021, I mentioned to a good friend that pregnancy scans in NZ should be free. My elder two children were born in London and my pregnancy scans had been free under the NHS. It didn’t make sense to me that this was a cost women in NZ had to meet at an already difficult financial time. I thought no one should have to pay to ensure they have a healthy and safe pregnancy.

Today, that lovely friend Dr Ayesha Verrall announced that under a Labour Government all necessary pregnancy scans will be free - added straight to your Medicard. A good friend and a great policy that will help Kiwi Mums and babies get off to the best start❤️🤰

Labour wants to ensure mums and babies are healthy and safe - because in the long run this is better for everyone.

He’s 13 years old now but during my pregnancy with him, I was taken aback when I was asked to pay for my scan. I was in a position to pay but couldn’t recall paying for them for my older child, 15 years earlier. It did feel strange that these integral scans would be charged for and I worried then about the mums who wouldn’t have been able to stump up with the money. Primarily these scans are to check the health of the baby and mama and check all the medical considerations - also to confirm the stage of pregnancy - which helps with getting an approximate due date and preparing for that. Quite important reasons to get the scan. No woman and family should forgo a scan because of the cost. Labour will make maternal scans free!
