Tuhua is a privately owned island administered by a Trust Board. Visitors are not allowed to land on the island other than at Opo Bay. Camping is prohibited elsewhere on the island. The camp ground is situated in Opo Bay (south east end of the island) and is nestled beneath tall phohutukawa t
rees behind a very sandy beach, in a picturesque sheltered bay. Camping is mainly at the north end of this bay, where space is plentiful for tents. A cooking shelter, barbecue fireplaces, toilet blocks, and showers are there. At the south end of the bay there is a range of other accommodation - cabins and units, toilet block, recreation room, cookhouse and office area. WHAT TO BRING
As well as the normal camping, fishing, diving and personal gear, you will need a gas or primus cooker, unless you have arranged to have meals at the cookhouse. You will also need your own linen and/or sleeping bags, etc
The island electricity supply is from a diesel generator which runs only for a set time mornings and evenings so you will also need lights and/or torches. There are no connections for electrical appliances. Fresh drinking and cooking water is available from marked taps, so you will need a water container. The showers, toilets, washing water and other taps are connected to a bore water supply which is salty and not suitable for drinking or cooking. At times, wasps can be a problem so if you are allergic to stings take you allergy medication. You will also need rubbish bags to take your non-combustible rubbish back to the mainland. If travelling by helicopter there may be limits on the amount of luggage which can be carried.
