I am a registered independent Taupo-based celebrant and a member of the Celebrants Aotearoa (CANZ) and have previously served on their national executive and am the immediate past president. With a lifetime in the communication and public relations sphere, it's my love of people and the intersections at important times of life that's drawn me to be professional celebrant. A: Absolutely! The most meaningful ceremonies are the ones that reflect who you are, and the traditions that matter to you.

As a celebrant I’ve stood with people at the threshold of life's biggest moments - weddings, funerals, end of life, naming days...

Alongside people at their happiest, their most heartbroken, and their most hopeful.

If there is one thing this job has taught me it's to listen with all my senses.

Writing and delivering a eulogy, or what I call a life sketch, is such a privilege.

It’s more than dates and milestones and doesn’t have to be a chronology of someone’s life. Be creative with how a life story is presented.

Often it’s by sharing small details, the quirks, the stories, the values and the threads of life that create the rich tapestry of someone’s life.

People are not perfect - you don’t need to make them sound that way! I think it’s important that everyone recognises the person being honoured.

A eulogy doesn’t need big words. Often it’s the simple truths that resonate most deeply: how someone made people feel, what mattered to them, the ordinary moments that became extraordinary because they were shared.

In telling those stories aloud, we remind ourselves that a life leaves ripples far beyond its ending.

Your wedding day really does go by so quickly. Don't forget to take a moment for just the two of you to take a breath together, and let it all sink in!

I always say: don’t rely on your photographer who will record the beautiful moments - use your eyes as camera lenses and stop, breathe, take it all in.

I love a winter wedding. They’re often smaller, more intimate and wonderfully cosy; we’re sometimes gathered in front of a roaring fire. And while there may be less sunshine, there are countless ways to create atmosphere; I’m a great fan of candles.

There’s often a relaxed feel to winter weddings too. Because it’s outside the traditional wedding season, couples can often find a wider range of venue and vendor options, and there’s something rather special about gathering together on a crisp winter’s day to celebrate love, warmth and connection.

I’m a big fan of candles - even the ones with LEDs. Candles can change the atmosphere of a ceremony. They invite us to slow down, reflect, and be present.

A flame can symbolise love, memory, hope, or connection and the simple act of lighting a candle often says what words cannot.

In a Livestream ceremony candles are a way of virtual connection across continents and timezones and I always light a candle to remember.

I recently qualified as a certified Grief Educator, under the guidance and training of David Kessler who’s a world-renowned grief expert. It was a deeply satisfying course and I plan to continue this pathway of professional development.

A Grief Educator helps guide people through loss, navigate grief, no matter the reason and to move forward in a meaningful way.
