Stay safe on Lake Taupō! Whether you're a local or visiting, please keep these essential safety rules in mind to protect yourself and your passengers.

⚓ Essential Boating Safety for Lake Taupō

⚓ Maintain a Proper Lookout: You must keep a constant, 360-degree lookout at all times to avoid collisions. Lake Taupō can get busy; stay alert for other vessels, swimmers, and hazards. Remember, it is your responsibility to take early and obvious action to stay clear of others.

⚓ Lifejackets Save Lives: On Lake Taupō, lifejackets must be worn at all times on all vessels 6 metres or less while moving. Ensure yours is properly fitted and securely fastened—you never know when you may end up in the water unexpectedly.

⚓ Vessel Checks & Comms: Perform a thorough check before every outing to ensure your boat is fit for the water. Always carry at least two forms of reliable waterproof communication (like a VHF radio or a phone in a waterproof bag) to call for help.

⚓ Prevent Boat Fires: We have seen several boat fires in recent years. To stay safe:
Faulty Wiring: Ensure solar panels are professionally installed; poor wiring is a leading cause of fires.
Explosive Gases: Fuel vapours can accumulate in engine bays. Always check for leaks and ensure the bay is well-ventilated before starting the engine.

⚓ Minimum Age for Skippers: You must be at least 15 years old to operate a power-driven vessel capable of exceeding 10 knots unless under the direct supervision of an adult who can reach the controls.

⚓ For the full list of regulations, visit the Department of Internal Affairs Lake Taupō Rules https://www.dia.govt.nz/Lake-Taupo-Rules-for-Operating-Vessels

Stay safe out there and lets all have a festive season that's remembered for the right reasons.

⚠ Hutchwilco has issued a recall for lifejackets with a particular type of inflator. These are found on 170N manually-inflated lifejackets.

Visit hutchwilco.co.nz/recall to begin the process of having these remedied. This will involve sending your lifejacket in to them (at no cost to you) where Hutchwilco will either replace the mechanism or refund you, depending on your preference.

Hutchwilco has indicated that they will have stock of the replacement mechanisms from 01 March 2025.

To identify your inflator, unzip the lifejacket near the pull-tab, then match it to the image on this post. If you aren't sure about how to do this or need help identifying your model, contact Hutchwilco directly, for assistance.

There are few worse feelings as a boatie, than needing to tug that handle, and not having it inflate, so make sure you initiate this process as soon as possible, before you need to call on it in an emergency.

Kia ora folks,

We are working through some upgrades to our online ramp permit system this summer.

Instead of the permit being issued as an image, a confirmation email with your Permit ID Number is your approval and will be required to be presented to the Taupō Harbourmaster if requested.

Please keep this reference number handy while out on the water.

On the 14th and 15th of December Two Mile Bay Boat Ramp will be closed between 0600 and 1800 to facilitate water safety crew and event staff for the Ironman World Championships.

Three Mile Bay ramp is a good alternative for launching between these times.

Kia ora,
As you may have noticed, there has been an influx of athletes into Taupō town. With the Ironman World Championship kicking off this weekend, we wanted to inform lake users about the swim course for the event.

Athletes will enter the water at 0700 on Saturday, December 14th, and Sunday, December 15th, for the swim leg of the event (course map attached).

The swim course will be set up on Friday, December 13th, and left out for two nights, ready for Saturday and Sunday.

The red and white Safe Water Marks (200m buoys) will be placed beyond the outer buoys of the swim course to create a buffer zone for competitors. These will be lit during the hours of darkness.

The course will be marshalled by event staff. We advise vessels using the Taupō Harbour alternate channel to be aware of swimmers and to give them and the course a wide berth.

Ngā mihi
