140 years ago, the eruption of Tarawera changed the lives of our Tūhourangi whānau forever. We honour those who were lost, those who survived, and the resilience that continues to define our iwi today.

Their stories live on through our whenua, through our people, me nga kōrero tuku iho (intergenerational knowledge).

At Te Puia, we stand with our whānau in remembrance and respect.

The stars of Matariki will soon return to our night sky, and so will our annual celebrations. ✨

Join us on 10 July from 5:00am to 7:00am for the Hautapu ceremony, a traditional celebration marking the Māori New Year.

Traditionally, after Hautapu, whānau would gather to feast, play games, and prepare for the year ahead. We invite you to continue the celebrations with our Whānau Day at Rotowhio Marae from 9am - 3pm.

It's not every day a professional drifter stops by Te Puia. We loved having Adam Lz and his crew visit before they headed to Taupō for Rotary REunion. They experienced a pōhiri and guided tour, and for someone whose life moves at full speed, it was special to welcome them to slow down for a moment and leave with a deeper understanding of Māori culture.
