Yesterday, we gathered at Rotorua Library, Te Aka Mauri, to mark the 140th anniversary of the eruption of Mount Tarawera 🌋

It was a meaningful moment of remembrance and reflection for our community, as we acknowledged the lasting impact of this significant event in the history of Aotearoa.

We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who joined us for this special occasion.
Special thanks to Whakarewarewa School for their kapa haka performance, and to our partners for their support in making this event possible.

📌 – Yesterday marked the 140th anniversary of the Tarawera Eruption. Pictured is a postcard of the Rotomahana Hotel (also known as McRae’s Hotel and Wairoa Hotel) in 1880, prior to the 1886 eruption.

Joseph McRae acquired the hotel and store in 1878. He was very successful in business until he lost everything in the eruption. He was recognised for his rescue work following the disaster and received a St John’s Canterbury Ambulance Medal. He later ran the Palace Hotel in Rotorua before managing hotels in Auckland and Sydney. He passed away on 7 June 1938.

You can read an account by Mr. McRae written in 1937 in Olive Pedlar’s scrapbook, titled ‘History of Tarawera eruption’ 👉https://pakiaka.rotorualibrary.govt.nz/nodes/view/1238

We're very excited to share that we have a very special author talk at 7pm on Tuesday 30 June:

"Te Tōrino Haere Whakamua, Whakamuri: at the same time as the spiral is going forward it is returning"

In the midst of a busy year launching four books in 2026, Witi Ihimaera is coming to Rotorua Library to reflect on his iconic novel, "Nights in The Gardens of Spain", published 30 years ago. He will talk about his current career, look back at Nights, and then look forward to future literature plans.

This event is a collaboration with Rainbow Rotorua who have an impressive programme of events for Matariki.

Funds raised at the Saturday Book sale by Friends of the Rotorua Library have made this event possible.
